Pets valued more than humans

r/

I’m a big animal person with exotic pets and had cats/dogs all my life. But the way people treat animals breaks my heart. We spend thousands on animals and ignore a homeless person. People will buy toys for their dog and never donate a dollar to starving families. This isn’t a bash against animals, it’s a bash against people who elevate animals to be equal with humans. But to me humans will always be infinitely more valuable. I’d save 1 human stranger over all my pets. I’d save my enemy over my pets.
And I cried when my pet rats died, so this isn’t me saying I dislike animals. But I will always love humans infinitely more.

I used to think the same, but every time I tried to be a good human to another human, I was always ripped off or someone tried to use me for their own gain.

Animals never made me feel the way people do and I reached a place where I would save a dog over a human.

I’m with you until you said youd save your enemy over your pets lol if I have a shit ass neighbor that’s trapped in my burning apartment complex and I can only save him or my dog… Well … 😬

Now if I had to make a choice between my shitty neighbor and my old lady neighbor’s Poodle or something I’m probably going to value human life over that – just because that isn’t MY dog

My cat doesn’t smoke crack and pee on the local Arby’s driverhru window

    Alright maybe the second one

You can love your animals and still care about other people. I spend a lot of money on my animals and I donate a lot of money to people. But, I’d much rather spend time with animals and humans. Humans kind of suck.

My husband definitely is more affectionate with our dog than he is with me and it grinds my gears

i stopped reading at the word exotic.

I think the main things to note on this is when you take on an animal you are committing to taking ownership of this creatures life. It is your responsibility to care and nurture this animal and to ensure the being lives the best life that you can give it.

When we see people who treat and care for their pets as people we tend to forget about the people who take their pets on without realising the HUGE RESPONSIBILITY that they have bestowed upon themselves and that don’t care for the pets properly.

Many people tend to be very complacent with caring for cats and dogs and don’t actually care for them properly with then leads to illnesses and bad behaviour which can be managed with proper care and planning prior to adopting an animal.

The animal is more of a Instagram clout or a spur of the moment adoption which they care for at first but then over time don’t realise how expensive and time consuming looking are an animal is.

We then want to ask these same people to show the same compassion for other humans in need?

We’re all wired differently, we all have different prioritise, wants and needs.

There will always be people who want to care for humans in need and likewise pets as well.

But we can’t expect everyone to be able to care for everyone else.

Ok first of all, this is a weekly post so not unpopular

Second of all, people need to understand consequences. If someone decides they want to ignore all the resources available to them (yes there are) and get high as a kite under a bridge then be sad they spend their food money on meth, that’s their problem. Why am I funding that?

Companion animals who are cared for by good, loving guardians are very fortunate. Global animal abuse is rampant. Trillions are tortured and murdered every year in factory farms, the fashion industry, and science labs for experiments that have an average of a 97% fail rate. Yet the common myth that animals are on earth as commodities for humans is the prevailing narrative.

In no world would I ever save my enemy over my pets

  12. Civil-Departure-512 Avatar

People are the reason I look both ways when crossing a one way street. People are the reason why I have 0 faith in humanity. My dogs haven’t and won’t give me a reason not to trust them but just about every person I’ve known has. So ya. Pets>humans

  13. ILiekBooz Avatar

Show me a dog with a gambling addiction or a cat with a crippling meth habit and I’ll show you a pet no one gives a fuck about. Better yet, try biting someone; even if they deserved it, then realize it’s not an instant death penalty like it is for dogs. Or experience your family moving, or evacuating from a disaster but not taking you because the new place doesn’t consider you family, so they leave you on the street.

  14. Ok-Perspective-1322 Avatar

I sort of understand. When there’s resources and energy that could go toward eliminating human suffering that goes to completely content pets who don’t need anymore toys or things, it can make me think for a minute

  15. Oneiroi_zZ Avatar

Animals are innocent, people aren’t. What’s your point?

  16. darthdodd Avatar

I’d help the animals. They can’t help themselves. The humans can

  17. Sofia-Blossom Avatar

After being fucked over by anyone I’ve tried to help, I’m saving my pets first. Animals CAN’T defend or help themselves when they’ve had a protected, indoor life.

When I get married that might change, but I hope I’m never in the position where I have to choose between saving my husband or pets. I figure I will choose the husband but be absolutely shattered over losing my two idiot cats.

  18. AlwaysATortoise Avatar

I’d kill a man to save my tortoise, and you can quote me on that.

  19. PlasticAd6997 Avatar

I think I value all life the same, and I don’t think that’s weird. Maybe it’s because of my autism, but I really don’t get people seeing animals as less than humans. Even if you don’t believe they have a conscious or feelings, I want everything to be happy and comfortable.

  20. User123466789012 Avatar

Never in the history of ever would I save my enemy over my pet LMFAO. Be so for real.

OP I spoil the f*ck out of my cats. Easter baskets, birthday cakes, Christmas stockings. You name it, they get it. I will never love you more than my pets.

I also donate a ton of toys to toy drives annually (it’s so fun shopping), vote in the interest of my fellow adults & children, donate money everywhere and anywhere I can for others, volunteer at multiple organizations for the homeless and youth. I’m privileged to have the income to do all of the above.

    These aren’t mutually exclusive.

people value inanimate objects more than people too? someone will buy a mf mansion. people are still starving. let people do what they want with their money. just because pets are alive doesn’t make them any different than people putting their money into luxury items or hobbies.

  22. ValuableDot8849 Avatar

Have you tried to help another human being? I have and if they choose not to want help there is absolutely NOTHING you can force them to do. If they need meds for mental health (you can’t force them) , if they have to live within their means and don’t you can’t keep bailing them out, if they are sick from poor choices made you can not always be the one to bring them to the hospital , other appointments or look after them 24/7. Because humans are not as innocent as animals I tend to look after them first as with humans there should be some kind of self motivation.

  23. RDOCallToArms Avatar

lol you’d save a stranger over your pet?

That’s a wild and unpopular opinion

  24. Fantastic-Corner-605 Avatar

Pets are mostly for the enjoyment of the owners, the welfare of the animals is secondary (unpopular opinion but that’s the sub. This isn’t always true for cats and dogs but definitely true for other pets like goldfish who definitely don’t want to live in a bowl.

People buy things for their pets because they love seeing their pet play with them. If that weren’t true then you wouldn’t have cases of people buying their cats expensive beds only for them to sleep in a box.

As for helping humans, we already pay a big chunk of our salary which goes to help other people in the form of welfare, food stamps, healthcare (yes even in the US), foreign aid, etc. Compare donations to homeless shelters vs pet shelters and you know which gets more money. Adopting a pet is less commitment than adopting a kid and a lot easier to get out of.

The world would be a happier place if we treated people as well as we treat animals.

  26. OneAndOnlyHeir Avatar

We value things we love more than things we don’t. It really is that simple. It’s our job to protect our pets, so why should strangers take priority just because they’re human?

  27. Competitive_Pen7192 Avatar

I’ve seen death and human misery over a number of years in my job but nothing had me more upset than my cat going missing. She turned up safe and sound so it ended well but still…

  28. therese_rn Avatar

This reminds me how I once saw a handmade road sign that said: “Slow down, pets & kids at play”

Love how they put “pet” before “kids” lol

  29. NefariousnessBig9037 Avatar

You obviously haven’t figured out that a lot of people will use you, fuck you over, lie to you al for their own gain, given the chance. They judge others just by looking or even hearing about them.

Most people suck. I vote for my pets and the people in my small circle.

  30. tonyt0nychopper Avatar

I’ve been saying this over and over again, it’s ridiculous. People would go to war over a dog; but will spit on and laugh at a human who is going through a hard time. Humans would rather feed, bathe & clothe a dog before they would a human.

  31. HamBoneZippy Avatar

The homeless problem is a lot more complicated than just caring and donating money.

  32. DaisyCutter312 Avatar

Counterpoint: If you don’t care about your pet more than some random asshole you don’t know, you have no business having a pet.

  33. PigletRivet Avatar

A human’s life isn’t inherently more valuable than an animal’s life. We only believe that because we’re humans and most of our relationships are with other people.

Most people value the lives of their loved ones over strangers, and pets are loved ones. Why would I prioritize a stranger over someone I love and share a huge chunk of my life with? Especially when that someone is fully dependent on me for survival.

Also, plenty of people treat animals like shit.

  34. NewMoonlightavenger Avatar

I can tell you it’s value my dogs more than I value random people. Yes.

  35. infjnyc Avatar

I dont agree with keeping exotic pets at all but nevertheless agree with general sentiment. (And yes I love animals)

This is def unpopular opinion people please dont come at me but loving animals is inherently selfish. We do it because they love us back. It is deeply conditional. And those people saying animals dont do drugs or gamble etc they dont because they cant they dont know how. If they did we would not love them as we do. Humans are more complicated and our lives are more complicated. Human relationships are harder.

I def see people value pets but dont help a friend or neighbor if stranger as much either financially emotionally or with time/service.
I see this pattern especially in western cultures. I have lived in both eastern and western culture. Is it a coincidence that they are individualistic vs collective culture? Food for thought!
