Why would anyone play if they’re not in the mood?

Why would you do something you’re not in the mood for if it’s not an obligation?

Yes. I get fatigued and need a break. Hell, this last year I even took a break from enjoying music, which I thought was impossible.

    What a strange question

It seems like an obvious thing, like you only do your hobbies when you’re in the mood for them, but I know what you mean.

I feel like I barely have motivation to do the things people mostly need low motivation to do, like gaming or watching TV. I’ve never been a huge gamer but I’ve been wanting to play some games or watch some shows for months but am just never in the right mood or have the motivation to do so. It sucks.

Younger year no. The urge to play is high all the time. So you play all the time.

When you get older, got a full time job with responsibilities. That is when you just play when you are in the mood. Or if anything if you are not tired at all.

I’ve been wanting to start up my sims game but……I just can’t find the motivation to do it. Walk past my console all the time and just rather not. But the idea of playing it sounds fun

I also eat food when I am hungry

I have weeks where I’ll play a game forever then just go months without touching any at all

For me gaming requires a certain mental energy level. I love gaming to wind down after coming home from work, but sometimes if I’m especially spent I won’t be up to it.

Now that life is a lot more fast-paced, I only play games with a good story when I can properly focus on it, otherwise, I’ve found myself leaning towards city-builder games the past several years. Games like Civ or Frostpunk are the only games I can play while multitasking.

Maybe a lifestyle change affected the way you play games cause you don’t have the same mental energy anymore?

I actually have to watch YouTube videos about the game before I can fully get into it

    Idk why

It’s depression for me. I have adhd and usually can now only game if I’m on my meds for it. Off of them, I have zero desire to do anything at all. It makes me upset, I grew up gaming and loved it so much without meds and now to only enjoy them on those meds feels crappy.

  17. GareththeJackal Avatar

Yes of course? I don’t really understand the question. Why would I force myself to play vidya like it’s a chore?

  18. AZULDEFILER Avatar

Don’t worry, that’s the great thing about them…they’ll be there

  19. Possumnal Avatar

I only do anything when I’m in the mood for it. I only watch porno when I’m horny, I only cook food if I’m hungry, sometimes I feel like listening to music and other times I prefer silence… video games are no different.

You may need to expand on this, it’s an oddly worded question/statement.

I won’t really engage in my hobbies if I’m not in the mood. Sometimes, it’s simply not being in the mood or wanting to do that specific hobby. Forcing yourself to engage in a hobby when you’re not in the mood is a sure fire way to kill enjoyment of that hobby.

Only when I see my other symptoms of depression would I link not wanting to play games with being depressed

  21. randoperson42 Avatar

I usually only play when it’s the last thing I want to do. I have to make sure that I despise every minute of it.

  22. ctgrell Avatar

Umm…. Duh? If I don’t feel like it I obviously don’t play. Unless there’s an event and I grinded so much, I have to push through to get the big achievements. By the time I finish I usually get back into the mood

  23. FamousZachStone Avatar

Yea it’s not a job, so you only play if you want to.

  24. 22taylor22 Avatar

Yes… why would I play games when I dont want to?

  25. PM-ME_UR_TINY-TITS Avatar

Yes, I can go months without being able to play a game then suddenly become obsessed with one and put 50+ hours into it in a week or two.

All too often I’ll play around halfway through a game, lose motivation for gaming and never get around to finishing it.
