I was out walking my dog (he’s a good boy but can be a bit reactive so I have to be pretty careful when around people) when we turned the corner around our local recreation complex and I heard some kids swearing at each, we kept walking by when suddenly it broke out into a fist fight. The kids were throwing punches with a few others standing watching, I yelled “HEY, HEY CUT IT OUT” snapped my finger a couple times and the shouted “DO I NEED TO GO GET SOMEONE” too which one of the bystanders yelled back “nah it’s okay he was being super racist” I said back “oh, okay then” and walked off, But dialed up the Highschool next door since it didn’t really seem like a police matter just some highschool drama and let them know that they had some teenagers fist fighting over by the complex and that I tried to break it up but couldn’t linger to long because of my dog and urged them to go over to break it up.
I just felt kinda guilty for not doing more and was wondering what others would have done in a scenario like that.

Teenagers can be unpredictable. First responders are taught not to turn themselves into victims by getting into situations they can’t handle. You have no way of knowing if those kids were going to turn on you and attack you. In that situation, it’s best to leave those things to a professional. Call the school. Call the cops. Don’t get your own ass beat trying to be a hero. Unless you legitimately think they are about to kill the kid or severely disfigure them, don’t get in there. Document and report. That’s the best thing for you to do there.
