I think his words will carry more weight for USA specific issues and I hope it’s a chance to show the world we’re capable of having good leaders

He’ll speak English better than the last couple of popes… that’s about it.

I’m excited for Catholicism to finally explore the theology of free drink refills.

So far it mostly seems to be jokes about Malort replacing holy water.

    Almost nothing.

The southern baptist MAGA wing will probably start frothing at the mouth.

Honestly not much, though he may get more attention here in the US compared to most popes.

More Americans will be mad at the Pope now for sure. I’m sure the new Pope will feel free to openly criticize US foreign/Domestic policies and rightly so.

America has always had two favorite religious groups: protestants and Jewish Israelis, new Pope is not in those groups.

I mean it sounds like he’s lived most of his life in Peru, so not much. But it is kinda fun.

Catholic Americans would give him a little respect otherwise mostly pride in Another American First.

Gonna piss off all the fake Christians REAL bad. I half-expect that any day now they’ll declare Jesus DEI (unintentional pun) and create a new MAGA Bible without the New Testament.

Not much, but my sincere hope is that he’ll help project an image of sound, capable American-born leadership in a time when that is sorely lacking.

He is the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy: “Papa Americano

I can’t predict the future of course, especially not these days, but my guess:

Very little. More interest from American Catholics for a bit. When he makes the comments all popes make (treat people well, racism bad, don’t dehumanize migrants, help the poor, abortion bad,…) some American politicians may speak more loudly about it.

I expect that he will explicitly not visit the US early in his papacy, to try to avoid appearing too closely tied to the US.

He will say religious things. He will not endorse any American politicians. Some politicians will use what he says to try to get people to vote for them and others will say that he’s getting involved in politics just by preaching what Catholicism teaches, and try to use that to get people to vote a certain way. Same as always, except perhaps a bit louder at first.

Trump will brag about having an American pope a bit (so will a lot of people). If trump or his advisors have any sanity let, they will not state that the pope supports trumps immigration or trade policies etc. If they do, the pope will likely feel obligated to state that he does not, but he will try to find a way to do it in a way does not appear to be a direct response from him. Someone in or associated with the Vatican with a title will state “I’m not aware of the pope supporting such things” in some press release (or maybe explicitly deny it egregious cases), and the pope himself may give a homily on the humanity of vulnerable or something (which, again, he’d do anyway).

Ultimately not very much. I’d like to think a relatively young progressive American Pope can stem the tide of Fire and brimstone zealots and aggressively anti-theism snobs with a message of tolerance , but I’m not holding my breath

His speech was really good; our church must grow in faith with a commitment with Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and God. Christ is king and is on the side of little children, sick and vulnerable ones. His message couldn’t be better. I wish he may bring hope to unite our faith and renew our votes in the Holy Spirit. Let’s wait and see.

No idea. I’m not sure it will make any difference. Once Pope they are global in influence and therefore in policy. I don’t know that his country of origin will matter. He was a resident in various countries already, in the past.

  22. BrazilianButtCheeks Avatar

I think it makes absolutely no difference at all

  23. MeanTelevision Avatar

My hope is that those who don’t like America or Americans won’t use it to lambast him any time he says or does anything they don’t agree with. “Oh what do you expect, he’s American…” that type of charge.

  24. friendsofbigfoot Avatar

Well, the Devil’s been pulling the strings in the Catholic church for centuries, so probably not much.

  25. MyLittlPwn13 Avatar

With any luck, he’ll be in a better position to tell our president where to go and what to do when he gets there.

So far it’s mostly been jokes about deep dish pizza, the White Sox and Da Bears

My hope is that he will be more poignant about his rebuke for MAGA and Trumpist ideologies/policies given that he has first hand exerpience with what that impact looks like on society.

Could be wishful thinking, and other than that I don’t know there will be much of a discernible difference. Still, using his influence for that alone would be a worthy cause, and make a positive impact on the world.
