Why do I never meet any Paraguayans here in the US? Where are you guys?

r/

I was born in Argentina and raised in the US but my grandma is Paraguayan, and the older I get the more I notice I don’t know any Paraguayans apart from her (not counting family members who I’ve never met in person). I always took it for granted that I have Paraguayan family but lately I’ve realized how little I really know about Paraguay in general even though half my mom’s family is from there which makes me feel kinda disconnected from it. What happened? Where is everyone??

Your grandma lied to you. Paraguayans aren’t real.

Miami has plenty. I believe at one point AA even flew MIA-ASU.

I live in Paraguay now. I ask myself the same thing when I lived in the States. I knew many Latinos there from other countries, but I had never met a Paraguayan in the U.S. A couple of key factors IMO would be Paraguay’s small population size and their economy and their distance from the States. This affects how/when they travel. Also, I don’t see a lot of migration to the States from Paraguay. Sure they are going up to visit temporarily, but in general there is not a lot of relocating to the US. That will affect how many Paraguayans you know and meet in the States also….And one more thing, did you know that the state of Kansas has an agreement with Paraguay so that Paraguayans can get in state tuition at Kansas public schools? I don’t know all the details on it. But out of Paraguayans that have lived in the States that I have talked to, I have met a disproportionate amount that lived (went to school) in Kansas. I never heard so much about Kansas until I moved here. Ha.

I’ve never met a Paraguayan, I think they stay mostly in the south.

I think Foz do Iguaçu is to Paraguayans what Miami is to Mexicans in the US. No need to strut that far when opportunity is at the door.

Do Paraguayians tend to immigrate or stay in their country? Tbh I barely know about the country except for the fact that they have guarani as an official language which is really cool. Would you say that Paraguay is heading in the right direction development wise?

The only Paraguayan I ever even heard of was Inez from the movie Bottle Rocket.

Mba’éichapa. NYC area and DC area you can find Paraguayan culture festivals with Paraguayan food, traditional dance, music, and even Paraguayan harp musicians. There’s also the I Love Paraguay Restaurant in New York. Their food is incredible. Hope you can check it out and meet the community.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Paraguay isn’t a real place. It does not exist.

supposedly they used to be a lot of them in argentina and then they went away, i guess they tend to not blend well with communities.

    1. Paraguay is a relatively lightly-populated country in the first place, so there are much fewer of them in the world than Mexicans, Colombians, Brazilians, etc.

    2. Paraguay is very far from the US, and hard to get to, as there are no direct flights.

    3. Paraguay has historically been one of the least affluent countries in South America – although it has improved in recent years – but this obviously impedes one’s ability to travel and immigrate

    4. For those who can afford to migrate, it is much easier to gain residence in Spain, where you will actually find many Paraguayans

    5. For those who do live in the US, most are concentrated in NYC and Miami

I’m in San Antonio, Texas. I used to hangout with a Paraguayan guy during lunchtime in high school, a pretty fun guy! Up to that point I never heard a Paraguayan accent before and thought that his soft pronunciation of the letter R was an artifact of him also speaking English. Then, last month I was waiting at a local college language office, and a lady walked in asking for information in Spanish. She too was pronouncing the Rs very softly. She then told the clerk that she was from Paraguay. I then realized that this is how paraguayans speak, and it was all a dream because Paraguay doesn’t exist.

I live in Florida rn and yeah there’s a lot of Latinos but very little Paraguayans. Though most of the Paraguayans in the area know each other, we’re all like family friends now and we have get togethers pretty often. There was only one other Paraguayan who went to my uni, I matched with him on tinder and it turned out he was the son of a family friend😬

They’re in college, that’s the only place where I have met Paraguayans in the USA.

They don’t have time for foolishness, they come here, get their degrees then get out, All business.

I met one here in LA in a Mexican hood where I grew up. He was an older man. I spoke to him in English first because he looked straight up German, he only spoke Spanish. We got to talking and it turns out his family were nazis and they fled to paraguay after the war.
