Haggling culture is stupid

r/

Whenever I sell something on ebay, people INSIST on haggling.

I don‘t have a problem with the practice per se, but the thing is: they haggle when the price is high, but they also haggle when the price is low. And the margin people expect to haggle is always the same too, no matter if the original price was good or not. It really makes no sense.

Let me give an example. I sold a bike for 50€. It was fully functional. Honestly a steal, I should‘ve gone higher from the start, but I just wanted to clear out space.

Guy agrees to buy online, drives across half the country with his daughter in tow, then goes „45 😏?“

Ok buddy and what if I say no? You gon drive all the way back with nothing to show for it because of 5€?

It‘s honestly so stupid. I now think of a fair price, then add 20% on it, so I can always agree on people „haggling me down“ by 10%. I end up making MORE money, but people just seem to love the ego trip of getting one over you 🙄

It’s so obnoxious when people do this. I only haggle at a car dealership. I love ‘buy it now’ on eBay.

I get that it’s annoying, but you also do have people selling things where they don’t know how much it’s worth. So then the option is overpay, or they just don’t sell it.

I have only sold a couple of things on eBay, so I’m not an expert on how it works. But is this something you can have a fixed price on? Or even write “no haggling?” I just thought maybe if you let them know on the front end, it would save you the trouble later on.

I remember I sold a fully functioning electric guitar once for 20 euro. It even had 7 euro worth if fresh strings on it.

Guy shows up and is like would you give it to me for 15?

We had sorted of bonded a little of music at this point – I felt vaguely bad because i hadn’t done a great job of putting the strings on, and I find it hard to say no to people.. I stupidly agreed (I’m fairness, losing out 5 bucks isn’t a big deal to me)

Couple of months later, excact same guitar up on marketplace (like, it still had my sticker on it), for 40 😅

I’ve tried to haggle in Asian street markets abroad because that’s what they say you should do but I just don’t have the skill (I am such a softy when dealing with Asian girls sue me) but my Chinese GF will get me the best prices anywhere. I can’t be bothered with second hand goods stateside though

    “We’ve already negotiated price.”

Its that simple. If they tell you how far they drove, you tell them thats not your problem.

Hate to break it to you, but unless you’re going into a large retail store, every price is negotiable. It’s basic supply and demand.

But… isn’t that just funny? If some guy did that to me I would laugh and say we agreed on 50. And if they said no I would just laugh again and say they are a clown.

People making a fool out of themselves is just mildly entertaining.

Sounds like the guy got the bike for 45.

I sold my old car years ago, it was nothing special just a hatchback Hyundai excel that was my first car. It was in good condition, had $3,500 sound system in it and I listed it for $2,500 to get rid of it.

A guy calls me up and wants to take a look at it, sure, he comes over with his daughter and we go for a test drive, he’s happy with it, she’s happy with it and he offers me $2,000 for it.

At this point I just wanted to get rid of it because I bought a new car and wanted the space so I accepted his offer, but I tore the sound system out of the car before giving it to him.
