I like waiting at traffic lights as a pedestrian

r/

I walk around London a LOT, and I naturally walk quite fast. I leave early and arrive to my destination early so I can enjoy the walk.

Traffic lights allow me a moment to stop and gather myself for a bit as I tend to walk fast without realising. Idk if it’s weird but sometimes I need to do my shoelace, put something in my bag, adjust my jacket etc and this is a good time to stop (rather than stopping mid-walk in a busy street). Even more so with the thieves around at the moment, I can be more aware of my surroundings if I’m not moving so I can make these adjustments

I also don’t like rushing across the road with my heavy bags to dodge the traffic / many bikes. I have a bad knee and deaf in one ear, and on those roads where traffic can come from three directions, I can easily miss something & not have the agility to pivot quickly

I saw a couple of people this week rushing across and stalling traffic in the process – one almost got hit by a car – just for the pedestrian light to go green as they were halfway across the road. If they had waited an extra 10 seconds they could’ve avoided that altogether

I don’t think it saves that much time in the end and it seems like a very stressful way to navigate the city

For those in the US, I think there’s a law against this? And I was having SUCH a good time crossing the roads over there because of it! I didn’t feel like people were annoyed at me standing there haha

Whenever I’m in London, which I’ll admit is not that often, I just get the tube everywhere.

I do a bit of walking, obviously, but I don’t like walking everywhere in London. I’m far too lazy.
