Manicures and pedicures are not relaxing

r/

I have never experienced relaxation while receiving a manicure, pedicure, or combination thereof. I am constantly uncomfortable, both physically and mentally. My skin and nails are being cut and sanded and manhandled in a very rapid fashion. I am losing skin and bone left and right. I cannot use my phone because one hand is always being tended to. I know I am being talked about but I cannot prove it. The discomfort of my skin being shorn and shredded cannot be overstated. The water of the foot bath is not calming, because my foot and leg are being taken in and out of the water every minute. The nail tech and I are both desperate for this to be over with. I am always concerned about how much to tip and how and where to leave the tip. The manicurist’s desk? It’s not theirs, it’s a revolving desk space. What if it gets stolen? The nail techs disappear 2 seconds after they finish and you cannot find them because they are also so stressed and just want to leave your presence. There is nothing relaxing about a nail salon. Not one thing.

I’ve never heard or had the impression that It should be something relaxing…

Hard agree. I’ve had one pedi in my life and never will again. Super uncomfortable the whole time. I see you.

How do you feel about massages?

I’ve actually never had a pedicure, but I’m planning on getting one for my birthday, and I’m very excited about the foot massage part. I find any kind of massage to incredibly relaxing and wonderful.

Lol i dont get the people who fall asleep in the pedi chair. There’s an actual stranger touching your feet

Sounds like the issue is your salon…

Totally agree! I have never had a pedicure because my feet are so ticklish I’m concerned that I would accidentally kick the technician in the face.

It’s a different experience in different salons. Some have loud music, everyone is talking, some are serene. Some have good coffee, comfy chairs and professionals that have light hands, so you’re just sitting, drinking coffee for an hour and after you just refreshed after doing nothing for an hour with fresh, beautiful, lotioned hands/feet. The most rewarding doing nothing in my life.

I guess it depends on which salon. Mine is trully a pleasure! It’s on appointments only and they take their time on you (up to 2h30). It’s calm, not full of people, low music and they will offer you some tea.

I close my eyes during my entire pedi appointment and shove my back in the massage chair and savor every minute lol

One of the reasons I don’t spend money on it. I’m lucky where I have pretty healthy nails (they don’t break or split) so I do my clean up every weeks ish and that’s all I need. I don’t need anyone asking me questions or judging me or feeling super uncomfortable intense refinements. It’s also just an added expense I don’t want to spend at all.

It’s certainly not relaxing for me because I’m basically holding hands with a stranger for an hour which is pretty awkward, but I don’t find it as stressful as you. I don’t think I’d go if it was a bad for me as it is for you. I’m sorry!

Omg especially if you get gel

Yeh to all of the above, but have you ever had an auntie rub your calves and feet with the hot rocks? That makes it all worth it.

It’s a sensory nightmare for me too. I only endure it for special occasions and vacations.

Didn’t realise how much i hated my feet being touched until i got a pedi

Manis are fine. I don’t like pedis because every time they go in for the leg and foot massage it tickles the fuck out of me.

I’m extremely ticklish so a pedicure is out of the question. I don’t need to accidentally kick someone in the face. I do my own manicures and pedicures.

Absolutely agree. I’ve had a few mani/pedis over the years for special events, and always hated it. Like you said, it’s not relaxing. I find it awkward to be face-to-face with a person for that long and not say anything. The pressure to make small talk is immense, but I’m an introvert who hates small talk, especially with strangers.

Yall are clearly going to the wrong salons lol.

Agree! Thats part of the reason I do them both myself. It’s relaxing! I grudgingly get my hair done, but also do not enjoy that experience. I’d do that myself if I thought I could do it right.

Not to mention the stress of questioning how sanitary everything this…
