Hi! My two uncles are awesome and want me to make a scarf for each of them. I’ve ordered yarn in their favorite colors, and I can hardly wait until it gets here. I’m a bit hesitant though. I don’t want to make them too feminine. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just not their style.
I was hoping for some advice from y’all. I’m thinking geonetric shapes. Nothing too lacey?
What do y’all like in scarves?

Team colours?… I.e. their favourite sports team
I would honestly be touched that someone made me one.
My mother started a scarf for me before she passed away, which my sister is continuing. Regardless of colour, style or anything else it’ll be a treasured possession that I’ll use regularly.
A neutral color with a highlight of their favorite color would have been the move
Can’t go wrong with a Dr. Who-type scarf.
Can you do plaid?
Most of the royals have their own tartan. It would be cool to do a prince of Wales.
Geometric patterns are cool.
Solid base with pinstripes.
Are they into anime or video games? If you can incorporate symbols from those it would probably be well received.
Old school: Scarf the 4th Doctor from the “Doctor Who” BBC series would be serious extra effort, if they were into that. (some lady made a scarf for the actor, it was literally long enough to wind around his neck twice and still stretch a very tall actor’s height.)
My favorite scarf is one my late grandmother made me. It’s the colors of the high school I was going to at the time. It’s longer than I am tall, which is great cause I can loop it around a couple times and stay super warm.
Idk if your uncles are like most men, but we tend to lean towards utility when receiving gifts. So long as you are using colors they like, they’ll be happy that something you made is keeping them both physically warm, and emotionally warm.
Its a scarf I cant imagine how it would be too girly. But you could always ask them what they mean/ want for a scarf
The only thing that I’ve seen on a scarf that made it seem “girly” was excessive tassels. I think a moderate number of short ones can help with drying, but I’m not sure.
Stripes
Make them the Tom Baker, Dr. Who scarves. Doesn’t have to be that long but they are iconic.
There is a patter called honeycomb. If you are talented like my neighbor, do that. I rarely see that pattern anywhere.
honeycomb stitch
I don’t think you have to worry about them being too girly
Just dont use baby blue or pink.
I love me a snazzy scarf. I definitely wouldn’t make it lacy, but, like, a normal male scarf? Don’t make the fringes too long, mostly darker colors with a tinge of brightness?
They don’t sell them anymore, but I loved the old Johnston & Murphy scarves. I found an image of this one: https://www.johnstonmurphy.com/dw/image/v2/AANO_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-genesco-master/default/dw8e14ec50/large/494204_master.jpg
Google image search “men’s crochet scarf” and get some ideas. I personally like this one.
