“The Hidden Scam at Highway Dhabas That No One Talks About”

r/

Yesterday, I was traveling in a group of 5 traveller buses and we stopped at a highway dhaba. I asked for a ₹20 cold drink — they charged ₹25. Then I asked for two ₹10 chips packets, and they quoted ₹15 each. I was shocked at the blatant overpricing and decided not to buy anything.

It might seem like a small scam, but think about it: each traveller carries ~250 people, and with just 5 buses a day, that’s nearly 1,25,000 people annually visiting that spot. Now imagine how many such dhabas exist across the country pulling the same trick.

It’s not just about ₹5 here and there — it’s about exploiting travelers who often don’t have other options. This kind of unchecked overcharging needs more awareness and regulation.

Has anyone else faced this?

They were charging the monopoly price – happens everywhere including the U.K. – so you either buy at what they charge or don’t buy

The driver of the bus gets paid and given free food for stopping at that Dhabas
