Sometimes I don’t swallow food. I chew it for the taste and then spit it out.

r/

I’m lactose intolerant, and I no longer eat dairy. But every once in a while, there will be a food that contains dairy sitting on the kitchen counter (I live with my family) and I’ll just take a bite and chew it to taste it, and instead of swallowing, I just spit it out. I don’t risk swallowing it bc it’s not worth spending 30 minutes hunched over the toilet. Like last week, my family bought a tres leches cake, and they were all talking about how good it was, and I couldn’t resist, so I took a big bite, chewed it a bit, and spit it out, and it satisfied my craving.

Edit: yall I appreciate the concern but I promise I don’t have an eating disorder. I simply do this when I don’t want to deal with the consequences of digesting lactose. I don’t do it bc I’m afraid of the calories, I’m afraid of shitting my guts out.

Haha I do the same thing sometimes. Idk what to say except it’s gross but like whatever as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone lol

This can be veryyyy bad for your oral health and is a behavior linked to disordered eating patterns, so I’d just caution you not to do this often

I do this too! Except I have an eating disorder.

Since it’s because of being lactose intolerant and not because you’re worried about the calories this seems okay to me as long as it doesn’t escalate.

If it doesn’t spiral into anything else then i think it’s alright? just be cautious as there is actually something called “chew and spit” in the ed world.

Hiiii as someone with an eating disorder, this is a gateway to a VERY bad slippery ski slope ⛷️be very careful and don’t do it too much my friend

I’ve been on liquid only diets a few times due to Crohn’s Disease where the only things I could consume were food replacement drinks, water and black decaf tea and coffee for something like 8 weeks. I often wondered about trying your idea, however when I eventually did it I realised I wasn’t only missing the tastes of nice foods, but the actual act of biting, chewing and swallowing food too. I decided that I didn’t have the self control to not swallow (lol) so didn’t make it a regular thing.

I used to do this during the peak of my eating disorder

    That’s eating disordered behavior.

Also going to attract bugs to your trash.

I did this when I was a teenager and I actually discovered it was a form of eating disorder. For me the trigger was if I didn’t see it made or it was touched by someone I thought it was drugged and I’d die from swallowing it. Which then stemmed into a bigger issue because I didn’t know it was an eating disorder. It’s also not good to chew and spit your food because then your stomach thinks food is coming but then it never does.

I felt sad reading this, I used to do it when I had an eating disorder:(

That’s how I’m gonna have to enjoy any super spicy foods in the future. My stomach just can’t take it anymore, but it tastes so good!

I do this too with gluten!! I have an intolerance (not allergy) but consuming gluten makes me vomit. I’ll chew it up/taste it and then spit it in the trash and swish with water. Sometimes it helps but sometimes it just makes me want it more.

I did this when I was young and had an eating disorder. When. I figured out nutrition and got myself off the sugar cravings I didn’t do it again.

Hey, so doing this is bad for you either way. Chewing preps your body for digestion, but you aren’t digesting anything. You should probably mitigate by eating something shortly thereafter. It’s the same reason gum isn’t great for you.

I get it. I’m lactose intolerant too but sometimes I just crave that creamy texture so I’ll taste it and spit it out. You’re fine.

Some wine enthusiasts do the same thing and it’s not a drinking disorder.

I know some athletes who do this with steak.

I am gluten intolerant and I do this lmao. Pizza and naan are my weaknesses but they will destroy me.

Oh wow this is almost like torturing yourself? Idk why but this strikes me as possibly very unhealthy. Can you seek the advice of a nutritionist? That might be a great tool for you. I wish you the absolute best🫶

I’ve been doing this for a few years for the same reason. I’m allergic to whey so I avoid all dairy, but man do I miss eating certain things. Doing this curbs my craving and I can carry on without my insides fully revolting.

Just bite the bullet and eat it and then make time for it coming out.
