Currently, I am self-employed and I am not working for any company or institution. I am interested in registering to participate virtually for a conference in a field that I have been gunning to do a PhD in, but the form requires an affiliation. What should I list?
I should also add that I have the option of contacting the committee to not show my name on the public list of attendees, but the form still requires an affiliation.

I’ve seen people use “Independent” in such cases and use their personal email.
If it’s an ACM/IEEE venue they often use the @acm.org email which is basically a forwarding system. You can just change the forwarding email as and when your affiliation changes that way you keep getting correspondence.
I would put independent researcher
“Independent Scholar” is what I see used most often.
I always would put “self” if it were required on the registration, then have it blank in the program / proceedings. I wrote a column, and because it has affiliation as part of the template, I had put “unemployed” for that.
“Unaffiliated” or “none” works
Put down consultant or list your company
I recently put down (with permission) the affiliation for one of the research related societies I participate in (for complicated reasons I won’t bore you with) and it was perfectly fine and I even brought it up in my presentation.

I asked the same question, but I got different points of view.
