TIFU By Spending 6 Months Watering A Fake Plant

r/

My friend got me this nice plant. I watered it every day, talked to it, made sure it got lots of sunlight, etc. It was the first plant I ever had and I was thrilled at how well it was keeping.

I have quite a busy life, and keeping a plant like this is quite the commitment, but it looked so nice on my windowsill I thought I’d do my best to look after it.

Today, I went to change its pot. Turns out the plant is FAKE and I’ve wasted all this time watering and talking to a FAKE PLANT!!!

Nobody ever thought to tell me this – I don’t think they even realised it themselves because it has soil in and everything.

I contacted the person who got me it and she just laughed and said “of course it’s fake”… I feel like I’ve wasted my life.

TL;DR: Wasted 6 months watering a piece of plastic.

    this is cute hahaha

That plastic plant made you feel good and that’s all that matters. Now you have the confidence to get a real plant and take the best care of it.

I can’t keep track of all the sub rules, so I won’t call you any name.

That’s pretty funny. You never noticed the texture of the plant was plastic or silk?

    It had no smell?

    It wasn’t growing?

How was there not an enormous puddle in the pot after 6months this of watering?

  4. asluglicker Avatar

Well the trial run was a success. Time to get a real one!

I’ve seen a lot of house/office plants that fooled me both ways.

    1. this is adorably wholesome but

    2. didn’t you notice it wasn’t growing or changing or needing at least one deadleaf pick or wasn’t reacting to light/shade or just.. *something*

    3. this is still hilariously adorable.

  7. CoolSummerBreeze420 Avatar

Awwww i mean not growing is a big sign something is wrong. But now you’ll have the confidence to care for a live plant 😂

At you been humidifying the room…

  9. Ragnarock14 Avatar

At least now you know you have what it takes to nurture a plant 🪴

  10. m149 Avatar

Well, don’t stop watering and talking to it now!

  11. Inevitable_Phase_276 Avatar

Been there done that. My ex thought it was hysterical when he saw it. I wish I knew where he got that plant so I could get one, it was gorgeous.

Reminds me of dumb and dumber when the blind kid was petting a dead mockingbird lol

  14. gs12 Avatar

So, make up for it by getting a Poinsettia at Christmas – then just keeping it and watering it. Most people pitch them, i kept mine – and have had it for 4 years.

  15. gholladay Avatar

This is hilarious. Seems like a good training run for the real thing.

  16. rhinotomus Avatar

Watering a plant every day is typically not a good idea fwiw

  17. keziahw Avatar

I had a very similar experience. I had this friend for a year, we’d meet for coffee, play disc golf… Then one day somebody asked me why I was talking to a manikin.

  18. Xurroz Avatar

Well now you know you can commit to a plant! Ill be honest though most plants might not require you to water it everyday lol.

I recommend trying out a snake plant or a pothos plant.

Any plant you might be interested in taking care of?

I got really into plants over the last year and have loads of beginner tips!!

This is honestly so cute. I snort-laughed. 😂

I want to see what it looks like

My mom did this with an orchid, except she bought it herself. She was so proud of how it bloomed but that was her misting it until the glue on the bud came undone.

  23. Willr2645 Avatar

Can we see a pic? I need to know how real it looked

The microplastics in you appreciate your actions!

Oh wow! I really appreciate you sharing FU. Are you going to get a real one now? It sounds like you really liked it.

  27. hungturkey Avatar

    You are dumb

    Did you never touch it?

  28. GinaMarie1958 Avatar

Depending on the plant and where you live, once a week in the sink is enough. Also change out the soil and go to a bit bigger container every year or so.

  29. JenCarpeDiem Avatar

Watering it every day would have killed a real one, lol, your friend knows you better than you think

  30. NalaPrincess Avatar

I’m dying laughing because I did the same thing with a plant my daughter gave me. She saw me watering it one day and was just looking at me like I was crazy.

  31. xAC3777x Avatar

Those were your plant training wheels, time for the real thing! But make sure to not overwater

  32. 6inarowmakesitgo Avatar

My friend’s mom, who had terrible eyesight, had the same thing happen. My friend walked in one day and pulled a leaf off. She yelled at him for hurting the plant she took such good care of. He showed her that they snap back on. She said no wonder it didn’t grow in or out of sun, wetter or drier.

just so you know, if you water a real plant everyday, then you’re likely going to kill it with root rot.

You want the soil to dry out in between waterings
