TIFU by accidentally stealing at a job interview

r/

So, I had a job interview at a retail place that I was incredibly excited about as it would be my first job ever and it was fashion based and that is a huge interest of mine, but after I had been done with the interview, I wandered around a bit, looking a little keychains and clothing, not paying attention enough to realize I had grabbed one of the keychain and started to fiddle with the tag, etc, and only remembered when I had gotten into my mom’s car with it in hand, I knew it had been too late, the cameras had seen, the tag was gone, I was a thief. By default. Regardless if I wasn’t paying attention and now, I have come to the conclusion I will not be getting the job entirely based on this, why would they would someone who steals from their store even if they were friendly? 🙁 I’m an idiot.

TL;DR: I wasn’t paying attention when I left with a keychain in my hand inside the store I had just interviewed at, will not be getting the job 🙁

Teeny edit: I will listen to the advice given, though more is always appreciated, also, I think it’s silly to downvote me for this, just saying LOL :p

Security have no reason to review cameras if an alarm didn’t go off or a staff member didn’t catch you in the moment and force a review there and then.

Unclear how you basically black out and steal. Are you sure you didn’t mix a shot of vodka with prescription medication?

It would not surprise me at all if they also didn’t notice. And if they did just be honest. Say you were nervous about the interview and were fidgeting and didn’t realise until you got him

Why not get out of the car, go into the shop, and tell them what happened? The longer you leave it, the worse it will seem.

Go back and explain that it was an accident and pay for it. It’s the right thing to do. They probably wouldn’t take it as a return, but you can prove that you’re not a thief. You don’t want that guilt, no matter what else happens. You’ve only blown it if you don’t do anything. If someone did that in my store and came back and apologized, I would think even more of them. Did you tell your mom what happened?

Unless you’re working in the pentagon I think you’re fine.

You’re a straight up kleptomaniac in denial. There are groups for people like yourself.

They’ll never know. They’ll never check the cameras, they don’t even know it’s gone. They won’t figure out it’s missing till the end of fiscal year when they do inventory. At that point it’s just a number.

You’re good, I’d recommend never mentioning this again to anyone and it’ll go all go away tbh. Don’t go stealing regularly though

From one person with anxiety to another, you need medication

Im 99.9% sure no one noticed you take a keychain. If you don’t get the job it is not because of this.

Worked loss prevention for target stores for 10 years, held about every role there is from uniform, to plain clothes, to manager, etc.

Just take the key chain to whoever and be like “I walked out with this in my hand, what a doofus! So sorry, the tag has come off. Is it cool to scan one of the others so I can pay for it and then the stocks will be level? I was away with the fairies in that moment, lol, silly me. Sorry bout that, but I’m here to fix it now”

    No biggie
