It’d be great if some TV shows are released in the theaters

r/

There are tv shows worth watching in a theater which would improve revenues for the theaters and audience would enjoy as well. Imagine watching your favorite tv shows with other people cheering together. And tv shows have gotten to the level where it’d be great experience to watch it on the wide screen.

The whole reason I watch TV is to get away from other people.

  3. Ciprich Avatar

    I would never do that.

They do that sometimes. Watching the World Between Worlds episode of Ahsoka on the big screen was amazing.

I’d go see Severance in theaters.

Most show episodes, without commercials, aren’t long enough to make it worth your while to drive to a theater and buy tickets.

Scheduling would be an issue. Say a show is 10 episodes, 30 minutes each, so are you buying 10 tickets or sitting for 5 hours?

It might have legs if they could pull it off. All day ticket for like $19 might seem like a deal.

All those cliffhangers would have people running to concessions.

Get a license and sell those THC infused berry drinks. Win!

I stopped going to the movies because people suck. Talking , on their phones, etc. No way I’m going to a TV show that’s an even shorter amount of time.

I bought a single very large TV in my house for this experience. I can’t imagine how much it’d cost, movies are dumb expensive these days.

    Unpopular indeed.

There are shows like this. Fawlty Towers springs to mind!

I think watching a single episode at the theater would be a little excessive but a ‘double-feature’ of episodes would be about 40-120 minutes which I could deal with.

The biggest drawback would be the cost per visit. 10 episodes average and having to make 5 trips would be extremely costly when a Netflix/Prime/Hulu subscription would be about the same price of a single trip. Also giving you access to many other shows.

Most people now also have a ‘home cinema’ with a stupidly large TV so it is almost like the cinema anyway.

I am with you, partially. 😉

I imagine seeing shows like Strangers Things in theaters would have been amazing.

And, what? Binge watch every episode in one sitting? Buying season tickets? What happens if you miss an episode?

I would never do this. I hate going to the movie theatre even for one movie, but to watch a series that way? The sound is too loud, the seats aren’t comfy, and the snacks are way too expensive. And too many people don’t know how to behave in public.

I prefer watching movies in empty theaters. It’s the quality of film and audio I enjoy.

Are you meaning showing old episodes or premiering new ones at the same time they are on TV or streaming?

I feel like special live events or series finals of very popular shows are the only ones that would draw enough of a crowd

  17. bahumat42 Avatar

    They do do this.

Dr who’s finale is going to cinemas at the end of the month:

Game of thrones did it. The last of us did it. yellowstone did it.

And if you go to the realms of anime one of the worlds most successful recent anime (Demon Slayer) owes at least part of its broad success to the massive release of it’s second season which was first released in movie format, before being expanded in its episodic form. It was such a success that they did it twice more for other seasons, with another on the way for the upcoming release.

I feel like some of them are actually. Those fandango commercials before the commercials before the movie seem to imply that it happens.

I remember during the final season of Lost, an independent theater near me aired a couple of the episodes live. It was awesome!

Did this once, a local theater aired the Mad Men finale and encouraged people to dress in theme. It was fun!

Chosen released its season in theaters over the course of 3 weeks with 2-3 episodes at a time and it did well at the box office. It won’t be streaming until July. For an indie show it’s an interesting business model to release an entire season in theaters first to get extra revenue.

Love unpopular opinions where half the comments are saying no one would ever want this and the other half saying it’s not unpopular because the idea has already been tried to moderate success

    >other people cheering together.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but OP sounds like the most annoying person on the planet.

A movie theater near me that served food would air Breaking Bad. The theater was more full for that show than it was for most movies.  They didn’t charger to watch the show, they just charged for food. I was recently divorced at the time and it was a great escape for me.

Somebody mentioned that Andor S2 is coming to theaters. To be fair is was structure as 4 movies split into 12 episodes, it has potential.

Great, so I have to go to the theater every week when a new episode comes out….🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
