The first time doing anything isn’t “the best”

r/

Hey! I really don’t understand how so many people think doing or experiencing something for the first time ever is “the best”. I think you need to gain some experience over time first to get the most out of any activity or experience. So the best time doing anything, speaking from own experience, will almost certainly not be the first time. It will happen sometime when the circumstances are just right. What do you think about this?

Surely depends on the thing? Some stuff you need experience for – eg losing your virginity is likely not to be the best sex of your life – but I guess the first time tasting a new food could easily be the best?

It depends what youre talking about. Having sex for the first time is probably not the best, seeing a movie, a pretty view, playing a video game, etc usually is

    Have you tried drugs?

the feelings associated with doing something incredible for the first time cannot always be replicated and therefore will, in fact, be the best time for someone. you are under the impression that for something to be the best that it must be replicated. have you considered there are times where replication negates it being the best and thats the whole point of the experience?

The first time doing something that requires some sort of skill, sure you’re probably right. But something that is purely about a new or unique experience, you are wrong. Watching a particular movie or reading a book for the first time is going to be the best time because you don’t know what’s coming. The first time trying a new food or hearing a new band. The newness of it is part of the experience and part of what makes it the best

Depends on the thing. Some things, the novelty is a huge part of the experience.

Things that are “the best” the first time:

    Rollercoasters
    Food
    Watching a movie, show, etc
    Playing a video game
    Going to a concert
Sky diving, parachuting, bungee jumping, etc extreme sports

    I can go on

With stuff like media/entertainment, I agree. I never want to watch/play something for the first time all over again. That hypothetical sounds like a wasted experience to me. I get a lot out of replaying games I enjoy, for instance. I end up noticing more details and having a better appreciation of the story or game design.

A recent example: I played Final Fantasy 7 recently for the 5th time. I can honestly say that the experience of FF7 got better with each playthrough. I’ll never be able to play it for the first time again, but why would I want to?

    Ever tried heroin?

Doesn’t apply to psilocybin, probably true of other shit.

I think there are plenty of counterexamples in the comments and you’re doing the thing of being hyper literal about hyperbole. Who cares if the first time someone did X it wasn’t literally the best, but only the second or third best, when what the person really means is “it was really amazing and made me feel extremely happy, as if it was the best”?

First time I try a new cooking technique just experimenting usually ends up being the best I ever do it, I’m guessing bc I’m being super attentive
