10 minute work breaks are bullshit

r/

Like honestly, have you ever actually felt rested or rejuvenated after you’ve been on your feet for a good couple of hours, after sitting down for a whole 10 minutes? Because I certainly haven’t.

I fully believe that it should be at least 20 minutes.

By 10 minutes you’re only barely relaxed and you’re already on your feet again.

    Not exactly an unpopular opinion

We used to have an hour lunch, but we got half an hour plus 2 15 minute breaks. At first we were using our 15s, but it’s not fucking worth it. Like what do you do with 15 minutes?! Wow. So basically we got our lunch cut in half. Sucks.

  5. manimopo Avatar

    In california, it’s 15-minute breaks.

However, I take 20 min breaks, and none of my coworkers say anything.

  6. Any-Self2072 Avatar

10 mins is bs. 15 min 2x a day plus at least a 30 min lunch break is minimum

  7. mangosteenfruit Avatar

    You know what’s bs?

The people who smoke cigarettes that take extra breaks.

  8. Relative-Coach6711 Avatar

Ten minutes is plenty. Any longer, and most people lose their…. I’m trying to think of a good word.. People lose their pep.?

I worked a job in the past that was 10 hour shift with two 15 minute breaks. This included the time it took to walk to the break room and back which took a couple minutes. The machines we used had shoplogix so they would know if we shut down sooner or started back up later. It was awful. We were all forced to stand the entire time we weren’t on break other than the sit-down forklift operators. I would go take bathroom breaks even if I didn’t have to use the toilet so I could sit for a few minutes. I definitely don’t miss working there. It permanently messed up my back.

I don’t get scheduled breaks, but I usually take three unscheduled shits throughout the day

I thought this said “workouts” and I was about to go to bat telling you all tmi about my Fitbit data….

Work breaks…. Ugh. Yeah. Make them 30-40. Capitalism sucks.

    Get your cardio in though

  12. Particular-Season905 Avatar

Eh? I’m assuming this is American? I get 30 mins breaks where I work, sometimes 40 if it’s not too busy. I feel bad for all of you.

And to the people defending it….. what the fuck?

  13. EclipZz187 Avatar

At my last job I asked if my 30-minute break could be taken in six 5-minute breaks. Since I’m a smoker that made more sense to me, given the fact that a) well, I smoke and b) there’s nothing I would need an uninterrupted 30 minutes for. I don’t eat while I’m at work so there’s no need for that and honestly, a 5 minute break gives me something to look forward to every hour, thereby breaking the day down from one, big, insurmountable 8-hour slog to manageable segments.

The original idea of the 10 min work break is to have it every 1 hour if you are working at a PC to get your eyes to rest. I am not sure why is it just 10 mins on an active job, beats me…

  16. jackfaire Avatar

Breaks should also never start until you reach the break area.

I had an office that clocked them at15 min breaks starting when you leave your desk. But we worked in a huge warehouse turned office. The person next to the break room gets their full break. Person on the other end sorry Charlie.

  17. Svenflex42 Avatar

Depends on the total shift duration and frequency of breaks tbh

  18. FMLitsAJ Avatar

I work in kitchens, all I need is 10 mins to go smoke. If I take a full break I’m gonna lose all my momentum and can’t get through the rest of the night without feeling tired.

  19. SomeCommonSensePlse Avatar

You don’t even get to sit for 10min because half of that is spent going for a pee and washing your hands.

  20. Kaikka Avatar

I take 5-10 min breaks now and then to clear my head. Works great.

I’m a chef, after service I take 10 minutes outside. It used to be a smoke break, but I quit. So I go outside, drink some water and take a breather. It’s enough for me to cool off, let the heart rate slow down after a frantic service and then I go back in and clean down. I’d say it does help me to just cool off

    Find a better suited job.
15 minutes is ok but my time dont start until i sit down, so realistically its 20-25min.
ive really only had one job that had these timed breaks, i work trades mostly i take breaks as i need them regardless of anyones rules
i work a constant steady pace

  23. Latter_Present1900 Avatar

Lunch breaks should be at least two hours. Gives you enough time to find a decent restaurant and sober up if necessary.

  24. lil_lychee Avatar

Hm not sure this is unpopular. I guess my opinion would differ in the sense that even though I wasn’t happy to taste only 10, I needed to utilize it to the fullest and savored every moment. I would do meditations to help calm my method system ace redhead my body.

Fighting for longer mandated breaks will be an uphill battle. While we fight the good fight, I recommend getting compression socks for anyone doing shift work where they need to be on their feet. It’ll help with the fatigue a bit.

  25. fkdjgfkldjgodfigj Avatar

When I had 15 min breaks 99% of that time was spent using the restroom.

  26. Wide_Yoghurt_8312 Avatar

    Doesnt everyone think this

  27. MrOptimum Avatar

I give my people 15 mins for every two hours over the course of 12 hours.

    So…

    6:00 – start

    8:00 – 15 mins

    10:00 – 15 mins

    12:00 – lunch (30 mins)

    2:00 – 15 mins

    4:00 – 15 mins

    6:00 – end

This is seen as obsessive by some and not enough by others. I also have my share of employees trying and take advantage and stay on break for longer

  28. aBeverage0fSorts Avatar

a t least in my country `10 min breaks are paid; i’d rather have a 10 min paid break than a 1hr unpaid break

  29. Ealy-24 Avatar

Y’all actually be getting breaks and lunches?? Being able to use the restroom is the only break I’ve gotten in over a decade

  30. ChiefTK1 Avatar

Never worked anywhere in 20 years on the workforce that only gave 10 minutes though I have worked at 1 that gave no breaks

  31. Large-Lack-2933 Avatar

A very popular opinion. My colleagues in my office don’t take a 10 minute break after working 8 hours or more although we’re entitled to and I do. Sometimes I even go 5 minutes over and have a 15 minute break. Nothing said because I get my tasks done. 🤷🏿‍♂️

  32. National_Parfait_450 Avatar

Well, usually, you still get a proper meal break on top of that 10 minutes

  33. _KeyserSoeze Avatar

In Austria it is at least 30 minutes. Sometimes 60 minutes (depends on the company). Why? Because we don’t treat our employees like shit.
5 weeks of paid vacation (mandatory to take), 38,5h of work per week and so on…

I really don’t get why you guys want to sacrifice anything for some rich dudes who give a fuck about you. Unionize and kick their ass!

  34. MetalWingedWolf Avatar

I’m in the fence about this in a different way. It’s only an 8 hour shift. I don’t need any break if I ate before it started, and nobody ever says “Tine out, I need to take a ten.” Where I work. Instead, people just walk up to somebody they get along with and start a conversation. Start it with management and you might get a 40 minute break out of it.

I don’t really think if 6 people a day took an unpaid hour break and then another paid 20 minute break that the 8 hours they’re scheduled for would greatly benefit.
