AMA! (27f) genetic engineer lol

r/

Hello. I’m a whole doctor in chemistry 😭 I had a very extensive background however legit no one believes me except for the people who graduated with me. Lol we had a live graduation but everything was already set and so busy for us personally and my mom fell asleep on the live video chat lmfao she woke up when she heard the “C” names but she recorded the wrong kid. 🫩 life is not easy for engineers!!! I’m also married lol and have three cats and a puppy who all literally the sweetest things. However as cute he is our puppy is in timeout rn lol

However please feel free to ask me questions about anything. I’ll do what I can to explain ❤️🥳

How far are we from genetically engineered human babies that are free of genetic diseases and “flaws”?

Ages ago, I read a book on genetic engineering. It said there was a severe lack of global regulation on this sort of thing. Has that shifted? And are you fearful that the regulations are not as tight as perhaps they should be?

If you decide to have children, will you try to engineer them to manipulate certain traits like eye or hair colour?

    1. What are one’s chances of “beating one’s genes”, and what are good practices to do so?
    2. How developed and reliable is the field of epigenetics?
    3. Are there market-ready medications or procedures that are non-exotic or super-expensive that change or undo the issues someone might get from their genes?

    Thanks 🙂
