I have had friends tell me that Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the greatest gaming characters of all time. But the only game I felt ever carried that reputation for even a minute, was Sonic 2. Every other game feels like it punished the player for expecting Sonic to have fast and engaging levels.
The world’s fastest hedgehog looks like a straight punk whenever a level introduced anything but a flat solid track for him to run on.
Meanwhile Mario and every other video game character has an entire side arsenal of gadgets and gameplay mechanics to make those games memorable.
The most memorable part of being Sonic is when I run uninterrupted for a solid minute and a half for anything.
P. S: Sonic Spinball and Mean Bean machine get a pass from me, because those were actually worth my time.

I have a truly unpopular opinion in saying that I enjoyed Sonic 06. I know it definitely has issues, but it was fun for me

Sonic Adventure was one of the reasons why Dreamcast sold like hotcakes.
I feel like it’s kinda commonly accepted that Sonic’s actual games have mostly dropped the ball and that the iconic status of the character(s) comes from everything else but maybe that’s just my circles? I don’t feel like this is super unpopular.
I’d agree with this. They’ve never really known what to do with it or how to utilise the speed element, from the start to modern day. If it’s a 2D side-scroller, the player is punished for going fast by traps, unless you know the level by heart. If you try to go slow and careful, sonic handles like a shopping cart on ice.
They tried to remedy this by making it 3D, so you can actually see obstacles coming. Unfortunately this just turned it into a really mid racing game with no opponents.
Sonic is definitely mid overall. It just happen to come out at the right time.
Sonic colors and forces are good. And adventure two was good. Other than that? No.

But the Sonic writers always COOK everytime they make another Sonic Cartoon/Comics/Music instead of working on the actual games

100%. I enjoyed the Sonic games as a kid in the 90s but even then they felt they were very mid. They gameplay is very shallow and there really isn’t much in terms of powerups and those that there are in the series are pretty underwhelming. It’s visually exciting at times but the game play is just about going fast and it doesn’t really offer anything other than that and it gets kinda boring and flat quick.
The series really isn’t that great or amazing as far as platformer go. Very very mid and bland gameplay in reality.

one of the biggest features of early 2D sonic is that speed was fleeting and it felt like a reward for knowing the level when you got it. this has been misinterpreted by gamer brought up on the garbage 3D games to think speed is the only thing that matters.
sonic has not been good since the 2D era. the concept has gone from pinball mixed with mario to racecar mixed with tony hawk.
I like/love every single sonic game and absolutely would call Sonic the greatest video game character/franchise of all time. I am also probably mentally ill. 💀💀💀

This was made all the more glaring is that when Sonic 1 came out, it was competing against one of the, actual, greatest platformersnof all time in Mario World. The graphics, music, gameplay, ingenuity, humour, fun and ambience were, and still are, unparalleled.
Sonic, on the other hand, had decent graphics and he ran very fast. That was about it. The gameplay was linear and, dare I say, a bit boring. You can probably get through most levels by pressing right on the pad and randomly pressing jump at intervals. Hardly stuff of legends.
The Sonic games were pretty ground breaking when they came out and played a very huge part in the foundation of the speed running community, but they haven’t really aged well.
