constant online shopping should not be as socially acceptable as it is

r/

I do not mean for the elderly or disabled, just people whose hobby is basically waiting for Amazon packages.

I understand that it’s convenient but the impact of all the waste that gets produced because we’re too lazy to go to the store for toothpaste should be frowned upon a little more. If we ever want to make significant changes with climate change, it needs to become a part of ingrained culture, not just pressure from scientists and pleas to governments that don’t do anything.

Shopping in person allows for less deliveries (lower carbon emissions, reduces unnecessary waste) and makes us more mindful of overconsumption and making the best with what we already have.

I hope this makes sense— I’m stoned

Edit

Answering common responses:

“There’d be more carbon emissions if we all drove to the store individually”— ok what about public transportation?

“I live in bumfuck nowhere and there’s t a store within 10 hours of me!”— ok then this isn’t about you. First sentence said it’s for people who shop out of boredom when they don’t have to.

“We have free will!”— true. All I said is it should be a little more frowned upon since overconsumption is driving capitalism and killing the planet. Never said you should be exiled or go to jail damn.

“It’s so inconvenient”— I know. I’m not saying never order anything online again. Even in-store pickup would be a better option.

Basically we’re all used to be being zombies who have everything done with the touch of a button (myself included) but we should take baby steps to change these habits.

That’s capitalism and consumerism at work, good luck unwinding that. Most people probably agree with you tbh

  3. SomeGarbage292343882 Avatar

Counterpoint: Some people order online more because they don’t have cars, which has more of an influence on the environment than ordering stuff for delivery every so often.

  4. CplusMaker Avatar

Shopping in person doesn’t cause less carbon emissions as THOSE people had to drive to and from the stores. It’s actually MORE b/c it’s not deliveries on a route.

What makes you think shopping in person makes us more mindful of overconsumption? You ever shopped while hungry? Didn’t stop my from buying loads of shit I don’t need.

Most people will not care about climate chance until it directly effects them in a meaningful way. And we’re not there yet.

What makes you think I can teleport to the store?

  6. Accomplished-witchMD Avatar

I hate Amazon but I would have to spend even more time on chores running around getting what I need. If I avoid box stores which everyone hates too. I’m going to the grocery store (non perishables canned goods frozen foods,), the plant nursery (needed garden supplies), the hardware store (wire and tiles for the garden), and the farmers market (meats and produce). And I’m supposed to do that, have hobbies, work 40hrs, and workout and cook? I dont feel good about it but until there’s a massive revolution to work hours and increase in life balance. Not happening. Life is too packed.

  7. Brilliant-Market-144 Avatar

Your point is very valid but because online shopping is inherently designed to make shopping more convenient and easy, lazy people will find any excuse to justify using it

I agree but i will do everything to not see people

    > Too lazy to go to a store.

Plenty of items are online only with world wide hobbies, good example for me recently is Helldivers released a few months ago a record, I listen to records and collect any for games I play, they dont just sell that locally, especially alot of big things people buy.

    > Climate changes.

Even if it did have an impact the way of shopping for certain goods would leave alot of people making a worse impact, my neighborhood is one of thousands, the closest game, grocery, comic, etc stores are over 30 minutes, or we could have 1 guy deliver the 1-2 items people need and only those who buy in bulk have to drive.

Your idea would make sense if everything was around the average person but its just not possible without making your problems you complain about worse.

It’s probably a wash from a climate standpoint. Think about how much less resources one amazon warehouse uses for a city than 6 walmart supercenters and 5 targets.

  11. Ok-Drink-1328 Avatar

it makes sense, also i have a very bad opinion of who buys toothpaste online, but…

    >people whose hobby is basically waiting for Amazon packages

please don’t disrupt this small pleasure 🙁

  12. Disastrous_Rush2138 Avatar

why would we go in stores when we could order everything online lmao. I avoid malls these days. It ain’t the same as it used to be.

  13. Spirited-Humor-554 Avatar

Online shopping makes life much easier. I just purchased a washer all online instead of driving to the store, ordering and waiting for it to be delivered.

The only time I leave the house, is to go to doctor appointments. Otherwise I’m at home. I live out in the sticks, and am so grateful that I do live within 10 miles of a Walmart that will deliver. I’m not ashamed to say almost everything comes from there, including my clothing. Everything else is Amazon.

I know they’re both hated companies, but for those of us who are disabled, they’re a godsend.

  16. DeathSpiral321 Avatar

I can drive to 4 different stores looking for an item you’d think they would have, only to be told “we don’t have it here, but you can order it online”. Or I could just order it online to begin with and save myself a lot of time and fuel. I’ll go with the second option, thank you.

    Guilty but I agree

  18. EastLeastCoast Avatar

If I lived in a city, I’d surely agree. But I live in BFE, and sometimes Walmart, Home Depot and the dollar store just don’t have what I’m looking for.

You have this backwards my friend.

All the packages are “car pooling” and people are making less trips to the store which is better for the environment

Sure a lot of cardboard is consumed but that’s renewable and an easy problem to solve.

  20. Acceptable_Bus_7893 Avatar

Im sorry i couldnt drive 7 hours using my car just so a amazon van doesnt have to deliver my package

  21. thegarymarshall Avatar

I have never in my life wondered if my shopping, regardless of method or location, is socially acceptable. People are free to have and express their opinions about my shopping habits, though I have no idea why someone would.

I will continue to shop whenever, however and wherever I please and will never stop to even consider what others think about it.

Thanks, this reminded me I need to order cat food.

What creates more carbon emissions? me driving to the store, buying what i want and driving back

or a truck driving what i want to me while its on its way to 100s of other people with their items?

  24. Bitter_Ad5419 Avatar

I don’t own a car. Getting to the grocery store by bus is a pain in the ass and I’m limited on how much I can get based on how much I can carry. On top of that what if the store is out of something I need? Do I have to go back a few days later just hoping it will be there?

Fuck all of that. I will keep getting what I need delivered. If you don’t want to do it then don’t so STFU and stop judging other people who do want to

  25. orangutanDOTorg Avatar

Having to work so many hours you can’t shop in person needs to be fixed first

I feel bad for all those older ladies and house wives that thought it was a cushy job until they gotta carry 50bpackages a day ..I meet mine at the box when I’m expecting a delivery..I hate them getting out

  28. Big_Teddy Avatar

The “Only Shopping raises carbon emissions” is such a weird misconception.

What do you think produces more carbon, 1 car delivering toothpaste to 100 people or those 100 people driving to the store for toothpaste?

  29. Teaofthetime Avatar

Simply no. If you enjoy wasting time going shopping that’s fine but it’s a chore for me and there are many other things I’d rather be doing with my time.

  30. Mathalamus2 Avatar

wrong. online shopping for what you need and want should be expanded.

  31. SierraGrove_ Avatar

The carbon emissions thing has been said already so I won’t be at a dead horse but I will say as far as groceries go? Placing my order online is what reduces overconsumption. Online I have a list and I just look up the things I need and put them in the cart, in person I’m going up and down isles of tasty treats and things I wanna try so I get more than I need

  32. houseofnim Avatar

I would rather they drive for multiple people than multiple people driving for themselves.

  33. Yuck_Few Avatar

    Fewer deliveries*

  34. williamsonmaxwell Avatar

A lot of people here are deliberately misconstruing your point and being extremely defensive lol.

You are right, I’ve lived with multiple people who do it. It’s like an addiction, every day there is a new delivery. Often they won’t even open the package because they didn’t really even need it. It was just a spur of the moment thing.

Of course there are purchases that are necessary online, people who have to use it due to mobility issues or locale, but the edge cases don’t counter pose the issue

  35. tinfoil_cake Avatar

    All the people who say:
„Well how do you get to the store?“
Are most likely American and I can tell you: that’s just a skill issue of America.

Where I live (Europe) we can literally drive with a bike or with public transport to most shops. Do yes, OP is correct it just depends where you life

  36. LurkersGoneLurk Avatar

Very similar to gambling. You likely wouldn’t do it, or not as much, if it wasn’t available.

That said, most people are for free will. It’s no one’s responsibility to babysit you.

  37. okokokok78 Avatar

This is not unpopular at all. Excessive online shopping is lame and haha if u think u can buy happiness with stuff

  38. Specialist-Ad5796 Avatar

If I have to drive to get the stuff…how is that LESS toxic emissions?

  39. ShortUsername01 Avatar

Question: How many people “shop out of boredom”, how often do you think they shop out of boredom, and what is your evidence for this belief?

I suspect you are downplaying people’s legitimate reasons for shopping online in favour of imaginary reasons. When I lived in a crime ridden neighbourhood I didn’t want my Sailor Moon DVD intercepted by porch pirates, I wanted the English dub’s vocals mixed with the Japanese dub’s music. People don’t resort to online shopping unless they genuinely think they have a good reason.
