My 12 year old was called a n*gger today at school and then was suspended when she told him to drop dead

r/

My daughter was suspended after a student called her a monkey and a n*gger and she reported it to 3 teachers. The boy is in 3 of her classes. They didn’t send him home; they didn’t do ANYTHING. So in their last class the racist boy began to send her notes, continuing to harass her. When no adults came to her defense, she defended herself saying she wish he would drop dead. Now SHE is suspended for “threatening” him. Why wasn’t he immediately suspended? Why did she have to deal with his racist BS ALL DAY? Was she supposed to just sit there and take it? Apparently this school condones racism and does not protect their black students! I need advice on how to handle this. What legal action can I take if any? She went to school to learn and was attacked with hate speech and no one cared enough to do anything about it.

    What state?

  7. rhunter99 Avatar

Speak to the principal to explain their decision, then school trustees, then your local media.

  8. askashleythatsme8 Avatar

Go to the school district.Mention the word lawsuit.

  9. platano80 Avatar

Sadly, this will continue if not addressed. I would bring it up to the principle but if they dont do anything, lawyer up.
Sorry to hear this about your child. Its a terrible thing.

  10. TheBookOfTormund Avatar

I would ask these questions of the principal, school board, or superintendent and a lawyer.

Also, call your local news station. Unless of course, they are as racist as the School system. School districts HATE bad press and often going through the media is a lot more effective than going through legal channels.

  13. tinypicklefrog Avatar

Mention the words hate crime, racial discrimination, and lawsuit.

  14. nellion91 Avatar

Don’t think you l get a lot of support on Reddit these days.

My advise to you is the advise I receive, when you are a minority in a country you will get racial abuse, it’s not a matter of whether you ll get or not it’s a matter of when.

As a result our duty as parents is to build up our kids to be able to brush off that abuse when it happens and stand up to abusers.

Your daughter did this, so well done! Please reaffirm that she did the right thing (sure you did but praise is good) ref the school, there s very little in my opinion that you could do bar move if you have some good quality alternatives. I saw you said you were in Indiana (never been) but the populations statistic says it’s not the most multiracial state by far so you might have to reduce your expectations of support from the institutions.

    Good luck

He can quite literally drop dead

  16. LongMathematician656 Avatar

Considering that one white lady got nearly a million dollars calling that little kid the N word, this ain’t surprising. That said, reach out directly to the local news. I wouldn’t even bother reaching out the school board or principal.

  17. stirfrymetothemoon Avatar

Blast all over social media 😊

  18. Fluffy_Doubter Avatar

Go to the principal and tell them to fix it or you will. If they dont or ‘cant’ go to the media.

  19. DamianDaws Avatar

Contact your local news station. Also switch the child to a different school. I lived in southern Indiana some years ago and racism is everywhere, but thrives in Indiana.

  20. BxGyrl416 Avatar

If she’s gonna get suspended anyway, I’d rather she knock his block off.

  21. Shump540 Avatar

    Lawyer first, then newspaper.

  22. Heavy-Quail-7295 Avatar

Call the principal, raise hell. Let them know if he isn’t also getting in trouble, you’ll make it a legal issue. Drop dead isn’t hate speech. His comments were…

  23. Maleficent_Phase_698 Avatar

If your child is one of the only black kids in the school I just want you to know that this will happen until she graduates. I was called so many racist names growing up around white/latino students. Calling them names back ALWAYS got me into more trouble. The teachers are meaner and less empathetic to black students. Kids love to “other” black students and especially black girls.

If you cant get her around black students at another school, then please get her in extracurriculars that have more black kids.

Also remove the school name please!!!!

  24. mikeinarizona Avatar

Your local news station would love to hear all about this. I’d go there first because this is a HUGE deal. The principal doesn’t care so skip them and go right to all of your local stations. TV, radio, all of them.

  38. Jaded_Pea_3697 Avatar

It’s time to raise all hell over this. Absolutely not. Telling someone to drop dead in response to being called a racial slur should NOT be a suspendible action. Calling someone a racial slur should be a suspension!!! Shame on your daughter’s teachers and school for enabling that behavior and punishing her speaking up. 12 years old is already such a challenging age for children WITHOUT blatant racism and discrimination. I’m white and come from a majority white school district. I saw this a lot growing up and it makes me sick to my stomach that the schools allow this to happen. I am so sorry your daughter has to go through this

  39. Chrysania83 Avatar

As everyone else is saying, raise hell. Email the principal and copy the entire board and the superintendent on the email. Go to school board meetings and ask loudly why this is happening to your kid and why they are tolerating racism.

  40. sopeworldian Avatar

This is so common wish my parents cared enough like you did

  41. Turbulent-Morning389 Avatar

That word is considered a fighting word, legally. I’m not a lawyer and you should consult one, but he was not protected by the first amendment when using that slur, go to the district and mention a lawsuit, like the others advised. Your daughter’s rights were violated.

  42. emmkat24 Avatar

First thing you do is you go to Facebook and you name drop the school, then you go to TikTok and make a video saying exactly what happened and how the teachers purposely ignored her whole day, make sure you bring up racial discrimination, hate crime, and that you’re looking for a lawyer to take this case. Next you go directly to the superintendent tell them what happened how she was ignored, told to let it go and that it proceeded to escalate. If the superintendent doesn’t do anything straight to the news, they will eat this up. Your daughter deserves to feel safe at school.

    Edit- a phrase

Lawyer! If you cannot afford a lawyer, I would contact the ACLU and ask for recommendations on how to peruse this. They may have council that can help.

  47. NotUntilTheFishJumps Avatar

LAWYER. NOW. Seriously, I think people are way too lawsuit happy these days, but this is 100% a time to get a lawyer. The school called to protect your kid, and when she got fed up(who wouldn’t in her situation???), SHE gets punished? What country do you live in, if you don’t mind me asking?

  48. LaSage Avatar

I wonder if the ACLU would help with something like this. It is worth a call. I am sorry for the pain the bully and the school inflicted upon your family. Your child deserves a safe space for learning, and therapy for processing, provided by the school. While it is not an excuse, I am guessing the bully is experiencing abuse at home or somewhere in their life. That kid needs intervention and help, given their age, since at that age being an asshole doesn’t have to be permanent.

The school handled it miserably. I am sorry they failed you and your child. I wish you the best of luck in navigating this. I am glad your child has such a caring parent, and such a good foundation in your home, to start their life from.

  49. Lower_Edge_1083 Avatar

    ACLU would love this

  50. Boggy59 Avatar

Time to get loud. Your girl was unjustly disciplined, and doesn’t that hew to stereotype – the black kids always get punished more harshly. This needs some sunshine.

  51. buttstuff-spren Avatar

Where are the notes? That’s physical evidence.

  52. No-Finding-530 Avatar

She threatened his life bc he said words. You can’t do that?? Why ru confused

So she’s got actual notes and witnesses…why ru on here and not the schools fb and emailing the school/posting these notes and the boys name on social media?

I bet your daughter did more and there’s context missing. I guarantee it

  53. molemania102 Avatar

Go to the principal first. Then try other options if you can’t get anywhere that way, but you have to go to the principal first. my wife was a teacher and principal for over 40 years. I know how all this stuff works. You have to go through the proper channels before you try something else.

  54. style-addict Avatar

Lawyer up. Sue the school and the bully’s parents for emotional damage and causing a hostile school environment for your child. LAWYER TF UP!!!! 💅🏼

  55. ACM915 Avatar

You need to go to the superintendent of schools. You need to go to the school board and you need to go to the media. She was harassed with hate speech and that is a crime. So add calling the police to your list of phone calls.

  56. Midnight_Criminal Avatar

Don’t be scared. Share the school name

  57. FACEROCK Avatar

It would be great if you had a network of other minority parents who will speak up and show up with you. If a community of parents start writing letters, making calls, and showing up – scheduled preferably, unscheduled if denied – and start demanding answers. Make the racist principle and teachers look you all in the eyes and say they won’t take action against racial slurs. Let them know inaction is going to result in a larger community outrage at the next school board meeting and you’ll ensure each local news outlet is aware of the impending fireworks and shows up.

  58. ConfusedKanye Avatar

Contact the board and tell them you intend to file a lawsuit over racial discrimination based on a hate crime committed towards your child.

  59. Sharp_Scholar_2204 Avatar

well, you cannot threaten people’s lives. two wrongs don’t make a right. that being said, sounds like you need to move

  60. IDC1997 Avatar

Go to the news, go to the principal and drop lawsuit, hate crime and discrimination. Everything will magically go your way 😘

  61. J_All_Day86 Avatar

I’m not sure legal recourse would be worth the fight in terms of time and money.

I would try to speak with the kids parent/guardian first and deal with the school afterwards.

You can also go to the media.

  67. TerribleBudget Avatar

Man I’m guessing the school would be totally ok with “this school is ok with calling children n****rs” on a huge sign being held about 2 feet off school grounds right?

  68. Redditcanfckoff Avatar

Drop dead can be taken as a threat

  69. matt7810 Avatar

Definitely document everything. Does she have the notes that she was passed? Have there been any other issues with this student? If you want to do anything without the support of the school, you’ll need proof/something to back it up.

It does surprise me that no teacher at the school (none of the 3 she reported this to) took it seriously. I’d suggest talking to any of the teachers or staff that you trust. If you can’t trust any of them, then this school may not be a place to keep your kid.

  70. AmnesiA_sc Avatar

I am legitimately flabbergasted at what’s going on right now with this shit. A month or two ago we had a school board member start laying the groundwork for lessening consequences to racial slurs. I was like “no fucking way are you even suggesting this,” and then right after that the stuff with the lady calling the child the n word and crowdfunding $700k for her racism. We’ve had a huge uptick in our schools lately and while our school currently takes it very seriously, MfL and MAGA board members are trying to hamstring that.

It’s so batshit insane that this is what we’re dealing with in 2025.

Good luck with this, call an attorney that specializes in school law / Title IX stuff. Maybe also post on the legal subreddits if you haven’t already.

  71. dustinpdx Avatar

Something similar recently happened at a Catholic school in Portland, OR. You shouldn’t have any further communication with them, save that for your lawyer.

  72. iLuvfuknurpuzzy Avatar

I’m white and i don’t care what color you are, and no one has the right to say anything like that ever. So i would call the NAACP and a lawyer to sue the school system and the kid and his family.

  73. BeastieBoys1977 Avatar

Cletus: “Go ahead son, caller the n-word. She can’t do anything about it. Even if she tries, she will be the one in trouble.”

Also Cletus: “There is no such thing as ‘white privilege’.”

  74. NeolithicOrkney Avatar

Typical of how schools handle bullies. If the victim tries to defend themselves they are the ones punished.

  75. StrawberryGusher Avatar

You have a lawsuit that I’m sure a lot of lawyers would love to take up honestly.
