TIFU by responding “you too” when the doctor said “take your pants off.”

r/

Hello Reddit, this is awkward to post, but I don’t know who to tell and I want to share this to someone else.

Went in for my annual physical. I’m already awkward at the doctor’s office, so I nervously babble or do the whole nod-and-smile thing.

Anyway, the doctor walks in, chats a bit, and says, “Okay, take your pants off and lie on the table.”

And my dumb ass, instinctively, says: “You too.”

There was a long pause. He blinked. I blinked. We both knew what I said, and yet neither of us addressed it.

He just moved on like a champ. Professionalism of the highest order.

I lay on the table in complete silence, fully understanding that I’ll never emotionally recover from this.

TL;DR: Doctor told me to take my pants off. I said “you too.” I want to die.

Don’t feel bad, OP. You were just asserting dominance.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve been known to accidentally say the wrong thing in awkward moments… though nothing quite as memorable as that, still, I can only imagine how mortified you must have felt.

I understand saying you too in certain contexts when it isn’t correct, like “have a nice flight” or something but I can’t imagine saying it in response to an instruction I guess. Have you had other mishaps like this? Feels like ur wires are more crossed than the norm

I totally get rambling and such as I HATE doctors and hospitals, etc (trauma related). Also customer service just conditions us to say these quirky little things unfortunately. It may be embarrassing, but I think they figured it was a slip based on your expression, or they probably would’ve been super awkward the WHOLE time after. If it happens again, I’d just crack a joke or make a comment about being tired and apologize so that you don’t have to worry about the interaction. I’ve done this in interviews, medical exams, etc out of exhaustion when I was in uni, and everyone always giggled! Don’t stress too much lol. Hell, maybe subconsciously u just really like your doctor🤣
