Elderly Family member laid off

r/

Location: Portland Oregon

My mother was recently laid off from her job. She worked at a hospital for decades and due to unfortunate personal circumstances was still working at 75 & planned to work for a few more years. She couldn’t work as quickly as other co-workers but she still did what was expected. For the last 5 years she was consistently asked when she was going to retire by co-workers & managers. They laid her off a month ago with zero severance. She was devastated for loss of income & just has spiraled into depression. She barely eats or sleeps and has not left her house for a month. I’m frustrated for her. Is there any recourse here?

It’s worth talking to an employment attorney or three. They normally work on contingency, so they only take cases they think have a good chance of paying out. If she gets turned down by three, then it’s probably not worth pursuing.

She may need to file administratively (like EEOC) before she could sue but the attorney(s) will advise.
