No one actually cares about your job title they just want to know if you’re kind, fun, and make decent money

r/

In today’s world, job titles have become status symbols — but in reality, most people don’t truly care what your business card says. They care about how you treat others, how enjoyable you are to be around, and whether you’re stable enough to support your lifestyle without constant stress. “Senior Executive Vice Manager” sounds fancy, but if you’re rude, dull, or always complaining about money, the title loses all meaning.

Kindness matters because it’s the foundation of healthy relationships — personal and professional. Being fun doesn’t mean being the life of the party; it means bringing positive energy, humor, and ease into conversations. And while people may not outright ask how much you earn, financial stability subtly speaks volumes — it shows responsibility, independence, and peace of mind.

In social circles, dates, or even family gatherings, people connect with you — your personality, not your LinkedIn profile. Job titles may open a door, but your character decides whether people want you to stay in the room.

At the end of the day, being a good, grounded human will always matter more than being the VP of some obscure department. Your impact > your label.

People judge each other based on their job title?

I agree with this but it seems the corporate world and some sections of the society do not.

Status symbol means a lot, maybe too much in some communities.

This is an unpopular opinion? Since when

Everyone is gonna say they agree with this and it’s not unpopular but OP is simultaneously describing the same shallow “systems”, social, and economic, that everyone and their mother talks about at the dinner table only to go to sleep that night and never let the thoughts leave the table.

“Well, it would be nice if the world did work that way, but that’s not reality, people judge others and optics matter”

Eh. To a degree they do, obviously. But the entire cultural identity of Western society today is just based in optics and posturing. We’ve lost our sense of how to balance reality with humanity.

I love the “in today’s world” 7th grade essay preface about a topic people have been talking about since the dawn of the existence of titles. Feels AI-ish at this point, but is also just plausibly vapid.

I don’t want to shock anyone but young people today enjoy art and music that subverts cultural norms that you hold dear.

“Job titles may open a door” – that’s the whole point. Not that it’s something bad. People always prefer to be around someone similar to them – interests, intelligence, and yes, social standing, which what you call a fancy job title increases. They also admire you more if you are more successful. An engineer and an electrician will have more difficulty becoming friends than two engineers or two electricians, unless they grew up together.

Absolutely nailed it. Most people just want to feel at ease around you not impressed. Titles can start a conversation but who you are is what people remember.

    Your convoluting different social circles.
In business, title matters, kindness not so much.
    In romance, its the opposite.

Nobody cares about chat.gpt generated posts on Reddit, they just want to read something written by a human. If you don’t put even as little effort into the post as writing it by yourself, then I have no idea what you want from us except karma farming.

People ask what you work as so they can decide on the level of respect to give you.
