Just watched Spirit for the first time. Great movie, but for me it seems that the conclusion of the movie is that horses should always be free and no matter how good you take care of them they will be sad.
Don’t get me started on people who name their horses spirit cause it’s their favorite movie…

I prefer the Netflix series Riding Free
Counterpoint: you can enjoy a piece of fiction and think the message is either oversimplified or downright wrong. A protagonist who’s fun to root for in the context of the story doesn’t have to be making a point the viewer agrees with in the real world.
Ironic, given wild horses live (depending on country) anywhere from 10-16 years, whereas my sister has a horse that’s almost 30.
Aah, yes. Spirit.
Or as we call it.
Eyebrow horses.
“horses should always be free and no matter how good you take care of them they will be sad” what?
Spirit was a wild horse and he WASN’T taken good care of until he was with the tribe. Tribe’s horses were portrayed as happy and content being ridden, it’s Spirit himself who wouldn’t be tamed nor with cruelty, not with kindness.
It’s a film for children.
The whole point of the movie was that sometimes a horse wants to be free and cannot be broken. We saw plenty of horses perfectly happy to be with humans. Rain only left cause of love. As long as you treat them well and let them be individual they can be perfectly happy.
I mean it’s a pretty explicit anti-colonialism movie that portrays the destruction of a way of life through cultural genocide, just. Portrayed as horses. If you only got “horses should always be free” I think you should probably rewatch?
