TIFU by trying to save money on a haircut and now I look like a background character in a video game

r/

I’ve been trying really hard to stick to a budget lately. Like actually tracking what I spend, cutting back on dumb little purchases, saying no to going out, all that. One of the things I decided to cut was the $30 I usually spend on getting a simple haircut.

I figured, how hard can it be? It’s just clippers and some blending, right?

So I buy this $20 haircut kit off Amazon, watch like three YouTube videos, and tell myself “you got this.” I go into my bathroom, clipper in hand, and within five minutes I’ve somehow managed to give myself a crooked undercut that looks like I lost a bet.

I try to fix it. Big mistake. Now I’ve got one side that’s way shorter than the other and some weird patch in the back I can’t even see but I felt it go wrong. I even called my roommate in for backup and the second he looked at me, he just went “oh no.”

I had to wear a beanie all day in 80 degree weather because I had a Zoom call and couldn’t risk showing up like a rejected Sims character.

So yeah. TIFU by trying to save money and now I either have to pay someone more to fix this mess or just embrace looking like an NPC until it grows out.

10/10 would not recommend DIY haircuts unless you hate yourself a little.

Tl;dr Tried starting saving some money on haircuts and now I look like a GTA San Andreas character

Just use the clippers and take it all down to a quarter or 3/8 inch.

Just shave it clean and wait for it to grow.

I’ve been cutting my own hair since covid. It’s not that hard.

During COVID money got tight and the girl who cuts my hair had told me on several occasions I should just cut it myself as I have the type hair that’s pretty simple to cut. TBH I was kind of fed up paying $30 for a 15 minute haircut.

One day I just decided, I am going to give this a shot. I have clippers that have a dial for setting the depth, 1 to 14 and I just set it to 8 and run it all over my head. I don’t try and do any fades or anything just all the same length. Been doing for 3 years now and as long as I do it every two weeks it works great. IF I go to long it is hard to get it all even before the clippers run out of juice! lol I think the key is just stay simple one length all over until your a bit used to it.

Now is the time to figure out if you have a weird shaped head – shave it all down to a quarter inch. If it looks terrible then tell people with a smile that you lost a bet or you’re trying something new (that’s not working out!) but don’t take it too seriously. It’s hair, it will grow back.

I gave my partner a horrific haircut during lockdown because we both figured it couldn’t be that hard. Lesson learned. If you have a friend who cuts their own hair, ask them for tips but take it as a learning experience and don’t be too hard on yourself!

    30$ for a haircut??? Fuck! I’m glad I don’t do that shit anymore. I haven’t had a haircut since… 2011.

I’ve got a 20 year old cheap shaver, just put it on number 5 and go all over.

When I was about 10 years old I started shaving my head down to short fuzzy length all over. Eventually realized it’s not that hard to trim the sides and leave the top alone, as long as my hair is pretty short.

Now I’m 44 and almost never paid for a haircut in my life.

One good tip is to turn your back to the wall mirror and use a hand mirror to see the back of your head.

Start with the longest attachment, do the whole top and down to the sides. You don’t have to totally worry about the sides because you’ll be cutting it shorter.

Go in descending order from longest to shortest guard on the clippers, starting a few inches above your ears and using each shorter guard a little lower than the one before, blending the previous line. You want the line of the clipper edge to be on a tangent to the curve of your head, not pressed down to make a hard line.

The higher up you make the sides short, the more it will look like a military haircut.

    Hope this helps.

You didn’t give yourself a haircut you unlocked a hidden character skin called “Regret.” It’s okay, hair grows, but legends of this haircut will live forever.
