It’s weird when adults take their birthdays too seriously. Like it really makes me cringe when I see someone posting about their own 32nd birthday (not about the party, about themselves). It’s weird when an adult expects other adults to drop everything to plan around their “special day”. Most people know lots of other people, all of whom have birthdays. If everyone acted like this it would be impossible to celebrate anything. Don’t even get me started on “birth months” or people that drive around with “it’s my birthday!” And their cashapp written on their car window. It’s crazy how offended some people get if friends forget their birthday and it’s weird how much they expect from their friends and loved ones. It stops being fun and becomes a ridiculous and often expensive obligation. Extravagant birthday parties for adults give me secondhand embarrassment. Exceptions include 21st birthdays, maybe 50th birthdays, and definitely any birthday after 80.

Patton Oswald has a great bit about this. After 21 you only get to celebrate birthdays that end in 0. Oh, you’re 27? Who cares, go to work. Celebrating that is just a waste of cake and paper
After 21, my family usually does birthdays for every 10 years (so 30, 40, etc).

I use my birthday as an excuse to get together with friends I usually don’t get to see and have a fun time that I don’t always get to have. Some people go nuts with it, and while I personally agree it can be cringe I have too much else to work about and just sort it under letting people enjoy things.
I think it’s nice to be appreciated a little extra on 1 specific day out of the year. If you think it’s lame, then don’t attend. There’s your problem solved lol
There are people who should get to take a day each year to be about them, those are not the people throwing g extravagant birthday parties for themselves.
I like using a birthday as an excuse to get the friends around and have a good time, nothing formal, no gifts, maybe share a few memories of good times with the birthday boy. Sometimes as busy adults we need an excuse to enjoy each other.
I like celebrating my friends and family. We don’t go over the top. But cake, food, a little get together? Why not? We were probably going to do it without an excuse like a birthday anyway.
Maybe this is because my family genuinely like each other unlike seemingly a lot of other families. IDK.

Tbh I avoid adults who need a giant celebration for their birthday or the cridge birthday week people.

Dinner and drinks is how I’ve done birthdays with my friends as adults.
I don’t understand why people get so upset about adults celebrating their birthday. I understand if it’s someone that celebrates their “birthday month” or “birthday week” and have 5-6 different events in honor of their birthday. That’s obnoxious. Other than that; I don’t see the issue. Maybe because I come from a region of the US where we use any excuse to have a party, hell we have funeral parades. It’s about celebrating life with your loved ones. Why is that so annoying to people? Let’s have fun and enjoy being alive!
