I really dislike when people make assumptions about who/why people might enjoy something they aren’t a fan of

I’ve noticed over the years in media criticism (at least in non-professional settings) a common tendency when someone encounters a game, movie, tv show, book, etc. that they usually don’t like or find good, they’d attempt analysis to try to figure out reasons why other people might think differently (or if its well-known, why it might be popular).

Some instances of this have be ok or interesting, but most of the time the reviewer tries to argue that the “fans” enjoy the work for aspects surrounding or other than that the core element of the medium, or that people are simply blinded by nostalgia or have “rose-tinted glasses” towards it. It is especially frustrating when there is a large community that they can go to ask why do they enjoy it? It just seems to me to be a lack of curiosity and a failure to engage with the work and the community in a good faith manner.

This is a good point and kind of goes off of my own personal belief that you shouldn’t judge someone before getting to know them. And although to an extent, the nostalgia and rose tinted glasses points are likely true for some people, definitely not everyone. I love learning why people like what they like because I find it fun and interesting almost to a phycological level.
