I used to live next to an Alamo Drafthouse and it was my favorite place, they kicked out anyone who talked, used their phone, clapped in the middle of the movie or anything like that.
Now I have to go to an AMC and theres so many inconsiderate people talking to each other (yes I can hear you “whispering”), on their phones, screaming and cheering for absolutely no reason. In my perfect world, I would make them all silent but I at least wish there were more options for people actually there to see the movie.

How would they enforce it without making the situation worse?
Alamo is peak movie watching.
some people just dont know how to act in the movies sit still and shut up not hard
You must be going on opening night or weekend night that draws these crowds.
Just watch the movie at home đź’€.
Perhaps every audience member should pay a $20 cash deposit, and if they violate any of etiquette rules they should get ejected AND the theatre gets to hold on to that deposit.
I started wearing my air pods with nose cancelling. Movie sound is less loud (good) and can’t hear people talking (great)
I have to disagree with kicking out anyone who uses their phone. Some people need their phones to manage health conditions or other disabilities.
I do agree with asking people to turn down their phone’s brightness or the like and kicking them out if they refuse. But kicking people out with no opportunity to explain or fix their behavior causes problems.
Eh, I can ignore them
I think there’s a difference between conversations and comments. People can flame me for this opinion if they want, but I see nothing wrong with like a quick “damn dude that was cool” at an awesome stunt or whatever. So long as people don’t start chatting I don’t care.
I mean, I get what you’re saying but they’re incredibly public places with human beings. Human beings don’t always follow the rules or care because we’re a selfish species. I mean, you kind of have to expect some noise and sometimes it’s rude, but it’s kind of the same as going to a concert when people are talking or going to a bar and paying entry to see live music when people are talking, whispering or even being loud and drunk while the band is playing. It’s not really much you can do about it. I wouldn’t let it ruffle your feathers too much.
I haven’t been to a theater since dark knight IMAX.
For over 20 years my wife and I found a solution. We always go to matinee preferably the first showing of the day. It’s great.
What about laughing? Like if I go see a comedy and want to laugh, is that allowed?
Sorry, no noise at all is a step too far for me. I can’t clap or cheer at a great scene? Cmon, we are all just trying to have a good time.
There is a really good movie theater that does
Called my couch and tv
Better all around than that shit
So idk if it’s like this everywhere but movie theaters are dying and I think that the people working there in big ones like amc just don’t care
You can’t go out in public and expect not to deal with the public.
Harshly? Like ejecting people into the air from a seated position?
For the most part, I agree. I hate the etiquette that people lack now. Just a couple weeks ago, we went to see the new Final Destination and the people next to me were pulling contacts on their phones to add someone new. I looked at them and asked “Do you have to do that now?” And they put them away. But I’ve had not such great luck other times. I legitimately had someone pull up a football game on their phone in front of me. They would not turn it off after multiple requests.
I pay money to have an experience away from home. With good screens and sounds. I hate having it ruined by someone who can’t be off their phone for 2 hours. For those saying watch it at home or don’t go out, you do you. But the movies is one of my only treats. I don’t go out much. So all I ask is for respect while I’m watching a movie we all paid over $20 to see.
agreed. such inconsiderate behavior would get you kicked out in every other public place if its not normal.
if my kids acted crazy during the chicken jockey scene, for example… well, they arent going out ever again until they learn to behave like an adult.
In my option this and over priced snacks and drinks are killing movie theaters. Enforce people being quiet, significant drop the prices of snacks and I’ll go back. Not a second before.
Wow, nice one. Uovote for you.
“I consume my theatre soulessly”
Just kidding……………..or am I?
Movie theaters are fucking dead, just go week 2 or 3 and you’ll be one of like 4 people in the showingÂ
Absolutely yes people need to sit down and shut up.
could not agree with this opinion more….I think a movie theater with a “silence enforcer” is a great idea and if I knew of such a theater I would start going to the movies again and I bet others would too, this is a solid business strategy. ….If you need your phone step outside, Kid getting anxious? too bad last warning, I see you have a baby with you…Try AMC, Cant help from screaming or gasping? Im going to have to tell you to leave maam…
This is one of two major reasons I stopped going out to the movies about 20 years ago. The other is the abysmal quality of movies.
Is this an unpopular opinion?
Uh-oh. I don’t go anywhere but the Alamo and sometimes I clap because I get excited. I love the movie experience! I’ll sit on my hands from now on.
The only movie I’ve been to in theaters in the last 3 or so years was Longlegs. About 30 minutes into the movie I had to tell these people to be quiet. Felt like an asshole but my god have some awareness
This has become why I would rather wait a couple weeks/months to rent in the comfort of my own home.
The staffing model changed. 2 people run the whole place now.
It’s also the fact that ushers aren’t proactive enough to monitor and action such behaviour despite what movies and shows make you think that they are competent enough to do anything. It’s clearly fiction and they don’t care.
Not gonna happen.
Movie houses don’t have the stones to enforce any code of conduct. Not anymore. Personally speaking, I saw this as far back in the 2010s. Right around late 2010 – 2011. As smartphones just became cheap and ubiquitous to where it displaced flip-phones as everyone’s primary device. I saw the rise of people talking, texting, and playing mobile games at high volume (Angry Birds) in the cinema.
Long story short… I abandoned cinemas in favor of a DVD release or a streaming rental of whatever particular film.. No regrets. Never looked back since.
