Hair Stylists/Barbers should be held accountable for bad hair cuts/not giving you what you asked for

r/

Bad yelp reviews aren’t enough. I grew my hair out for well over a year just to ask my hair stylist for a half inch off and she proceeded to do her own thing and cut off 4 inches of my hair. I don’t know if its financial compensation or what but if you ask for something specific and they don’t listen some action should be taken. It takes way too long to grow hair and incompetent hairdressers can’t keep getting away with this.

Edit: A counter argument I always hear is “It will just grow back. It’s not that big of a deal” Yeah it’s gonna grow back but not for months/years depending on how bad it is. Should people finally reach their ideal hair length after months/years of growing it and go get their split ends cut off just for the hairdresser to take off all your progress and never actually enjoy the hair you worked so hard to take care of/grow?

The accountability is in losing your business and bad word of mouth/reputation. When we’re talking about a business, that IS financial accountability. They lose money when people don’t go there.

Civil or criminal liability is a Pandora’s box with something like that. Not to mention it is entirely subjective. There is no objective way to measure satisfaction with a haircut nor a way to establish negligence/harm

Did you ask for that specific amount off your hair or did you just say you wanted your split ends trimmed? I routinely lose a couple inches of hair with split end trims, but they usually hold it up wherever i have gone to confirm you’re comfortable with that amount of hair going.

You need to be firm in what you ask for. If you notice them doing to much say something.

    Sauce, let’s see the cut.

This is problematic because 99% of the time I’ve heard people bitch and complain about the horrible haircut they got, or literally crying about the traumatic haircut they were stuck with…it looks perfectly fine and in most cases more or less the same as always.  It’s usually never the disaster these drama-queens make it out to be.  I wouldn’t want these people – who seem to be the overwhelming majority – to have the ability to hold businesses liable for their actions own crazy, insecure Karen behavior.

Now, if it truly is a botch job or something super bad, then I’m not really sure what the fix would be aside from a refund.  They could offer you some free cuts in the future but would you trust them after the first bad experience?  I doubt it.  And because hair does grow back and it’s usually possible to hide most massive screw ups, I don’t know what proper compensation would even look like.

However, I’d like to know wtf happened in your story.  First of all, why are you going for a hair cut and asking for only half an inch cut.  Are you rich or do you just go to some back alley cheap barber?  Do you go for cuts every week?

1/2 inch isn’t a haircut.  It’s insane. Literally nobody is going to notice a trim that small.  You are saying your own money.  So I’m not sure I even believe your story which then brings me back to the first point above..:bad faith people.

I wish hairdressers would stop having such an ego and just admit when they don’t know how to do a certain style instead of botching their experiment on their client. It’s insulting they believe they can take the risk like that, as if someone won’t be walking out of there and having to live with that hair cut.

Hi, I’m a 33 year old woman and the last time I had any sort of haircut was 6 years ago. Maybe I can weigh in on this.

I have a history of the hairdresser not believing me or not totally understanding me, and taking off more hair than I initially agreed upon. And it’s happened time and time again. So l’m really scared.
And the condition of my split ends is probably really bad by now, and is probably hindering the growth and health of my hair. So it’s probably in my best interest to get a haircut. But l’m so scared. Like I have no idea how to voice what l want.

The ill-fated haircut from six years ago… I asked them to only cut off a couple inches, and leave my hair shoulder length or longer. My hairdresser instead gave me a bob hairdo, and my hair rested halfway down my ears. It was super short. And the cut was uneven (I only realized this in hindsight as I inspected photos of myself). I literally did not ask for that and I don’t know how it happened.

I mean, if you don’t do your due diligence prior to going to a barber or hair stylist, it’s also kind of your own fault😂

If you didn’t ask for your money back then you’re way too soft

    This was years ago

    I wanted layers

    Short in the front

    Long in the back

I wasn’t paying attention to what the lady cutting my hair was doing. She gave me a v cut that was short in the back and long in the front. Took months to grow that out.

What about shitty clients that don’t know what they’re asking for and get mad when they get it?

Or entitled assholes saying that’s not what they asked when it clearly is?

I’m neither a barber or a hairdresser, but I’ve worked with the public for about 16 years, and trust me : customers can be real dicks. Which is why I think yelp reviews are a far more efficient way to hold them accountable : word of mouth will affect the business, if they are actually in the wrong.

So don’t go there again? I mean it sucks but what do you expect? Them to be flogged in the streets?

I had a haircut so bad once that my husband left a yelp review about it. I didn’t want to hurt her business but he was like “it’s really bad.” I wish I could have had her pay for a wig to cover up the bad job. It was too short to fix so I had to wait for it to grow out (supposed to be a shoulder length cut and she went up to my ears).

I think if there was a system in place where people could lodge complaints in an official way that could be quite helpful. Not yelp or anything like that, but some sort of universal database for stylists and barbers. This may sound extreme but they actually preform many different applications and such on clients hair like bleach and different treatments , ect… need to keep their tools and scissors clean and sanitized so they really need to have a high accountability. This would allow someone to look up their stylist before the service and see what others may have had to say.

    Meh.
Show a before and after. You might be too close to the disaster to be a reliable witness. If they made you look better stfu.

I am trying to figure out how you allow someone to cut 4 inches of hair off of your head. I always pay attention to how much is being cut off.

If you can’t see the mirror, you can damn sure see the chunks of hair falling onto the floor. I would say something right away. Not sure why you didn’t.

“It’s just hair, it’ll grow back” is such a bullshit thing to say, yes of course it’ll grow back, but if you get a really shitty haircut, you have to live with that haircut unless you want to cut it even shorter.
