I’ve had them a few times and there are so many better dumpling/pocket-styled food items. The crust was always dry with the filling to shell ratio being off because the filling is not flavorful.
They are incredibly inexpensive compared to other dumpling styled foods. A Jamaican patty runs cheaper in most instances and is a larger serving.
I don’t get it.

I agree that a lot of them are imbalanced on filling to dough ratio with many coming out dry. But when it’s done right they’re really good. I don’t think they are more expensive than other similar foods though. I can get them for like $2 or less here from authentic places and they’re pretty big.
Which style of empanada have you tried?
Lets see…
There are soft empanadas and crunchy empanadas, they’re overpriced because they’re mostly sought by inmigrants of countries where a lot of wealthy people emigrated from (argentina, Venezuela, Colombia) and who are eating them out of nostalgia plus the people who make them come from the same countries where people often take advantage of others by overpricing stuff.
You’re probably not even the target costumer.
It all depends on the empanada, they come in different variants depending on where you get them from since there’s not like an stablished way of making them, how much filling they have and such
I had them from a food truck in Costa Rica and loved them. Never tasted the same after that.
Just so you know you’re touching on a cultural subject with possibly hundreds of different variations that can supply night and day differences 😂
Just look up the differences between Mexican, Salvadoran, and Colombian. Then picture that there’s dozens of variants of those, then you get to other countries and their respective regions with different empanadas. They can vary wildly 😂
Well first of all, there are so many different kinds of empanadas out there, depending in large part on which country they’re from. And beyond that, it just sounds like you just haven’t gone to the right place for empanadas. That, or your taste buds are just broken, because empanadas are amazing.
Literally my last meal request, they are that good where I live
Here’s an unpopular one: Cornish pasties of good quality (My partner bakes them) as superior to empanadas in Sydney.
Chain restaurant empanadas are generally weak af! I got empanadas from the jankiest road side stand in Texas holy hell was that good. I have some local restaurants that do a darn good empanada as well. A useless dumpling is a pierogi.
Only Spain has several types of empanadas dude
You haven’t had Filipino empanadas. I find them to be more consistent than the Latin American varieties. Filipinos fill that shell with butter
Secret to success…don’t pay for empanadas, the best are made by family. Unless they have olives in them then they can fuck right off.
You’ve probably never had a real empanada from Spain. Empanada gallega
Your empanada place is just bad. I looked up Jamaican patty, and I would consider it an empanada as well.
Really depends on where you’re getting them. It matters the nationality style. Are you buying from restaurants or street vendors?
If you’re in NYC this weekend is the National Puerto Rican day parade. So this weekend will be full of delicious cheap empanadas.
