Still younger than Jagger
So it happened to me in April so it’s pretty fresh … I remember being really upset about 30 … 40 didn’t bother me much … 50 there was a bit of existential sadness … like I just renewed my 10 year passport and there was this moment of “it’s probably my 2nd last passport ever” … and I am sad that I don’t have a romantic partner to share things with … but I also had a big party and that was a lot of fun and I have a full life … so a bit of a mix of feelings.
All in all, it wasn’t like a moment of “gah, I am old now”.
Like I was 50, no emotions or reflections and feel as old as I did before I turned 50
I spent my 50th birthday in the hospital recovering from a stroke, nurses got me a bag of fries from Wendy’S and a frostie
For me it’s the fear of no longer being relevant or a value to society. Of being put out to pasture.
Felt great
I started feeling old at 36
Didn’t really care. It’s nothing you can stop from happening.
Bought a longboard and started skating again.
I didn’t feel much of anything special. 30 and 40 were existentially harder. Turning 50 I was in better health and financial state than I was at 40. The main difference was that I’d become a granddad in the meantime.
I was fat and out of shape. I was in great shape before we had kids… That put me in a bit of a funk.
I’m 51 now and starting last October, I’ve focused on eating right and working out regularly. Down 60+ pounds with a flat stomach again and I’m lifting more weight than I was in my 30s. Coincidentally, my wife’s on the same train and has slimmed down too.
This has had a super positive mental impact– I was never really the ‘depressed’ type, but now, wake up every day like it is the best day of my life. Sure, I still have challenges, but they’re not what defines me.
Cheers!
I turned 50 during the Covid years. Sucked having a small family only celebration at home.
There hasn’t been a birthday that has bothered me, not one at all. I am 70.
