Today my brother (m16) came home after buying groceries and told me (m19) he lost his earbud case somewhere on his way back and couldnt find them anymore. I laught at him and he went to search for it alone for 5 mins (Its worth about 17 $). After he came back and told me he still couldnt find it, i told him i still had an old one that worked and would give it to him for money. I did this because some time ago i lost an earbud on my way to my internship in a kindergarten and had to buy new ones (20$). After thinking about it a few seconds we agreed on 5$ for my old case. To use his earbuds he would have had to buy completly new earbuds, so i thought that maybe i could get some money back that i used to get my new earbuds and he would safe some money from not buying new ones and using my old case. My mom and aunt noticed our conversation and acused me of ripping my little brother off. I dont think i was unreasonable, yes he needed it. Yes i dont feel bad about it. I managed to get some money back and he safed some money for not needing to buy a new case. Many of you will possibly think that i dont care about him, but i do. While at first it wasnt my intention on teaching him that nothing is for free, i thought it was a good opportunity for it. I know he is my brother and i should give it to him for free, but i believe that it was a logical and somewhat reasonable choice.

NTA bruh, you gave him a working case for cheap, not a kidney You’re not Amazon, you’re his brother, and you still gave him a deal. Yeah, sure, moms always think “just give it to your brother,” but hey $5 life lesson: don’t lose your stuff and expect freebies. That’s capitalism, baby.
$5 sounds fair. NTA.
You don’t have to give your younger brother things for free. You mom and aunt are treating you like young children.
NTA, you didn’t rip him off. You easily could have not offered to sell the case. 5$ is reasonable and it will hopefully teach him to be more careful with his things.
NTA
Not sure why your mom & aunt think you should’ve given him the case for free. Is it just because you’re the older brother? If so, that doesn’t mean you have to give him things. Your brother is old enough to know that there are consequences to be dealt with. He would’ve had to buy a new case either way, & you were just giving him the opportunity to pay less for one.
In my opinion, you treated your brother like an equal.
YTA – not about the money but you shouldn’t have charged your brother, you took advantage of the moment for your own gain. Given you weren’t using the old case anyways
NTA. Let your mom and aunt pay for some new earbuds if they’re so concerned.
NTA – it’s not “ripping him off” to sell him something he needs/wants for a fair price. As long as what you sold him was, to your best knowledge, in good working condition you didn’t do anything wrong or even anything mean.
