Don’t be mad! This is an unpopular opinion sub!
Here’s my take: adults spending crazy $ with all Harry Potter merch, having all Harry Potter themed stuff, and (the worst for me) reading and rereading constantly Harry Potter books.
I’m ready to be attacked 🤣

How is it any different from a Disney adult, or an adult really into Star wars or Lord of the Rings or their favorite sports team?
You never like rewatch the TV shows you love or anything?
So what’s the problem with people reading books they enjoy and buying things they like with their own money? How does this make them pathetic when there are people in every fandom who do this? What makes people who like Harry Potter special?
I’ve never really understood the Harry Potter thing, but I’m willing to recognize this is a me thing and not a reflection of other people. I didn’t really have much of a childhood. Even when I was a kid, I never liked fantasy or stories about wizards or whatever. I never really played with toys beyond Legos and never liked any of the movies my friends liked. I’ve never liked make-believe anything whatsoever to be honest. It’s just how I’m wired and I don’t think it’s for the better or anything.
Your first sentence infuriated me, but no, spending crazy $on Harry Potter merch is taking it too far lol. Watching it again every year is cool
Could you elaborate a bit on why you find it “pathetic”?
I’m not mad because you’re wrong, though you are. I’m a dweeb who still fucking loves Harry Potter and will be a Ravenclaw girlie till I’m in the grave.
I’m mad because this opinion is not original, nor unpopular. Do better.
(And yes I know this is a GOT gif, but relevant is relevant)
It’s one thing to not like something which makes sense. It’s also okay to not “get it”
But calling someone pathetic because they have a passion is loser ass behavior.
So, I say this with the most disrespect possible, fuck you. I say that as someone who doesn’t even like HP
Yea the adults hardcore into kid things (i.e. disney adult) are a bit off. But hey, it’s better than a lot of the things adults are into.
You wrote here’s my take and then didn’t even have a take, you just listed a bunch of actions.
Is this specific to Harry Potter, or do you make it a habit to get judgy when people have other interests, too?
Swap that out for Star Wars, Lego, LotR, Disney, Warhammer…. Let people like things.
Proud to be pathetic, tbh. I read the books at least once a year.
I don’t really buy merchandise though – my home is decorated quite differently. Meaning I don’t have the funkopops and display wands and all of that.
I think it’s fucked up how many of these adults are still financially supporting JKR and her anti-trans hate campaign in the UK. She is genuinely a vile woman and has used her billions made from HP to hurt so many incredibly vulnerable people. Like honestly yes in this way Harry Potter is unique to something like LOTR or Star Wars. Anyone who is spending money on HP is actively contributing to what JKR is doing. It’s not just an IP you like anymore, and I’m tired of people refusing to acknowledge that because they don’t want their nostalgia books tainted.
That being said I don’t have any issue with adults still enjoying the movies or books. Those stories used to mean a lot to me too. I just draw a line when people are still giving that woman money. I do not personally think there is any way to justify it anymore.
Do you feel the same way about “Lord of the Rings”?
stares nervously at pokemon card collection
This reads like your goal isn’t to express an opinion, but to make people angry, which is the truly pathetic hobby imo. Do you really have nothing better to do?
You can’t say “don’t be mad” while calling people pathetic
We all need an escape from reality, you are no different.
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
They are doing something which gives them enjoyment and helps them to deal with the shittiness of our world. I for one am all for it!
I have this wild policy where I simply don’t give a shit what people do with their lives, let alone what their passions are. If they want to be a Disney nerd, hell yeah. Good for them.
Can adults have little things that bring them joy without someone judging them and making them feel bad for enjoying it? Seriously….
I dont go around and judge someone for liking things that I dont like. Just do you. They arent harming anyone.
This isn’t an unpopular opinion. This gets echoed everywhere on the internet and has only become more commonplace since JK Rowling decided to become completely insufferable.
I feel like you’re describing the behavior of people with obsessions in general. And detesting the behavior of people with obsessions is something I’d be hard-pressed to believe is an unpopular opinion.
Obsessed sure but I think it’s fine to be a fan but once it gets to the same as a local sports team fanatic then I usually think that person should take a deep breath and do some other shit. Lol
Hell i am a fan and even read the books at least twice but I do agree there is a line. Lol
>I’m ready to be attacked 🤣
A bully ready to take on the consequences of their actions, that’s impressive at least.
I believe it’s “are pathetic” in this context.
Also as other people have pointed out, its not really any different from being super into Disney, sports, Anime, boardgames, LotR etc
Shh it’s okay to be wrong, pal.

Imagine growing up and still enjoying what you grew up with….
PATHETIC
What about adults who spend relentlessly on sports merch? I’m no harry Potter fan, but worrying about other adults spending money on a seemingly harmless franchise is stupid
I mean there are adults who base their entire life’s on a book they never read. At least Harry Potter fans read their holy book.
God forbid adults have hobbies, interests and fandoms. Get back to your boring office job NOW!
People are free to like whatever they want. Their money, their time, their interest.
But reaching the point of making a media franchise the center point of your whole personality is sad.
Re-reading is the worst? Not a chance.
The worst is the people who got deathly hallows tattoos, or those who use harry potter metaphors for real life situations
Not grasping the verb to be is pathetic.
Is it only Harry Potter people shouldn’t reread? And why? What’s wrong with someone enjoying something? Have you ever reread any book?
Wait until you find out about sports fans.
No difference between them and other fanatics. I hope OP has no hobbies they’re really into because if they do, they’re gonna look pretty hypocritical.
Why?
Some adults don’t have hobbies or interests, which is absolutely pathetic. Why is it pathetic if Harry Potter is my main dawg hobby as an adult?
Wait until you see how much money grown adults spend on children’s games. These people buy the merchandise, worship the athletes and spend billions upon billions of dollars to watch adults play ball.
Those people are the worst
If they have the money, who cares.
If they don’t have the money, it doesn’t affect you, so who cares.
And if they like reading the books, yet again it doesn’t affect you, so who cares.
Don’t yuck people’s yum. Sure you can disapprove. But the fact that it’s gotten you this worked up says more about you than anything.
So, having a childhood love of something considered nerdy, but loving football or any other sport from childhood to adulthood is cool?
Man let people love what they want to love. If it doesn’t heart anybody, which it clearly doesn’t, let them run wild with it.
Wait until you learn about Wizard Rock
I mean I grew up as a Harry Potter fan and still enjoy it so
Adults should be obsessed with working paying bills and being miserable, right?
I don’t like it for reasons, some related to the writing, some stuff out.
But I never got what’s wrong with this kind of thing by itself. Are adults not supposed to enjoy stuff?
Like are we just supposed to do our taxes and work for our corporate overlords and that’s it?
What a bizarre thing to be bothered about. I listen to the audiobooks every night before sleep, have done for about a decade and that affects no one else in any way lmaooo
If you think Adult Harry Potter fans are bizzare…..actually, I shouldn’t even mention Disney….
Why is reading the books the worst part for you? At least these people are reading…it’s actually sad how many people don’t read books nowadays so I will always applaud readers!
This isn’t unpopular. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy.
So people can’t enjoy things?
Spending an insane amount of money and essentially taking toys from kids is more the issue than enjoying Harry Potter. Finding nostalgia from your youth and delighting in it is so good for you and it doesn’t harm anyone…. flooding theme parks with drunk adults, pushing kids aside to grab the last toy off the shelf at Walmart, and being obnoxious, that’s the issue
Don’t worry. All of the millennials are getting their tattoos removed and denouncing their fan hood because of JK Rowling so they should dissipate.
I’m not a HP fan, I kinda agree w/ OP other than calling them pathetic. Like people are allowed to like the media they grew up with.
I’m just the asshole that says it was a mediocre children’s book and I don’t enjoy it in my adult age. I’m just not trying to judge people who did, because I was definitely a big fan as a kid. I mean Sorcerer’s Stone came out when I was 11. So it makes sense some Millennials have a weird attachment to it still.
You heard it here first, hobbies are for children.
I think what’s more pathetic is adults who can’t properly write….
I’m sick of seeing what are presumably adults refer to the three main characters as “the golden trio” it’s weird and stupid
Why do you care what people read and wear? Take a look inside my friend, there is more to life than judging others on superficial shit.
Its pretty true for most adults spending frivolously.
Welcome to the consumer economy – I hate it here.
I uniroincally endorse the President’s two doll policy.
Your grammar will be more unpopular than your opinion.
But an adult totally obsessed with a sports team is probably normal to you
The books were good, the movies were good. Let people enjoy their fandoms
They liked that stuff as a kid & now they have adult money & can buy cool stuff
That’s like saying people should buy Lord of the Rings merch or Star Wars merch as an adult. People like what they like. Wizards are cool. If they’re not for you that’s fine
I agree and luckily, I collect comic books and that obsession and hobby is unassailable!
You’re Gen Z aren’t you?
slides all my Lego kits under the couch ha ha yeah it’s time to grow up 🥴😂
You think Harry Potter is bad, I suggest you have a look into the bizarre world of Kpop
Hand me my wand….
Do you hate that people enjoy things or you just want them to enjoy better things?
💯
God forbid someone have a hobby lol.
Who cares? It doesn’t hurt anyone. Their money, their choice on how to spend it. No need to judge it.
>Don’t be mad!
As you call people with a hobby that you don’t share “pathetic.” 🙄
God forbid people enjoy something. What a weird thing to have an issue with.
It’s not an unpopular opinion, it’s belittling people for what they enjoy.
It’s as pathetic as those people whose entire identity is their sports ball team.
Why exactly do you care so much about people doing what they enjoy?
Mind your own business tbh.
What about adults obsessed with adults obsessed with Harry Potter?
I dislike Harry Potter but what a coward way to start calling people pathetic and then dOn’T bE mAd.
Yeah, that’s probably unpopular, but I don’t obsess over what anyone else decides to spend their money or time on.
Agreed
It is pathetic
But I would happily be pathetic than acting my age while being miserable and start drinking alchohol again because of it
Eh atleast they are reading books, I don’t understand people who make watching other people play sports their entire personality.
I used to think like this, but then I grew up. Just let people have fun, they’re not hurting anyone.
I don’t agree from the perspective of fandom, but do agree in the sense that these adults are now, willingly, supporting a real life, bigoted, bully and villain (the author). They can’t give up their nostalgia for the safety of trans folks.
I think all the adults who are into children’s things is a sign of a deeper cultural and economic problem. The unwillingness or inability to grow up and embrace adulthood (which should be better than childhood) feels like a bad cope and one that prevents people from dealing with their actual conditions. Hard to move forward when you’re stuck soothing yourself with nostalgia.
The societal embrace of “nerd” culture was a mistake.
I first heard of Harry Potter from friends-of-friends in their 30s who raved about the books. They had a more than slightly airy manner about them and I found myself wondering wtf was wrong with them.
As a hufflepuff, I respect your wrong opinion.
I get it but also don’t see why it’s worth saying it’s pathetic, because who’s to judge what others are into?
So you must think all religious people are pathetic too. (I certainly do, I’m just checking where you draw the line on obsession with fiction)
Boring opinion from a boring post.
God forbid people have interests and like things 😑
Kinda see the point you’re making but best perks of being an adult is buying the shit we wanted as kids
After looking at your comment history briefly, all I got was that you’re one of those people who thinks they’re better than others because you choose to read books that aren’t in the spotlight, and you make your entire personality about what books you’re reading and you never shut up about it, lol
Why do you care what other people do? I’m not a Harry Potter fan, but being concerned with other people’s hobbies? Maybe go outside
Let people enjoy things
Heaven forbid anyone be a fan of something..
