Astrology is just discrimination based on birth date.

r/

This is coming from a story I saw a while ago where someone was frustrated that his boss promoted him because of his zodiac sign. A lot of people said “This is so leo” or judged him for being upset that he got the promotion. I agree with him. It would be incredibly frustrating to bust my ass at work, do my best and deliver a great final product only to have my boss recognize none of that and reveal they only care about when I was born. Even just saying that someone’s personality is a result of their zodiac sign is irritating at best, offensive at worst. Imagine your were a victim of something, and that experience shaped your opinions on a controversial topic, and after speaking from the heart and expressing that opinion built on the pain you felt someone looked you in the eye and said with full seriousness “That’s such a Virgo thing to say.” Someone’s personality is the result of their experiences and all they’ve been through, and to minimize that by pretending the day you were born predetermined that is just removing the agency and minimizing the importance on a real person’s lived experience. In the story about the workplace promotion there was someone else who missed out on the job because they were born on the wrong day. This person was judged based on a quality outside their control that they can do nothing to change that has no effect on their job performance. That is the definition of workplace discrimination. It is not only a dumb way to run a business, it is unethical.

If someone who actually believes in “Astrology” says literally anything, and you take it or them seriously, that’s on you.

I just wrote a whole comment disagreeing with you until realizing that I proved your point of this being an unpopular opinion. Props

Zodiac signs, like any personality assessment like enneagrams or mbti, simply serve as a means for people to talk about traits that may not otherwise come up naturally in conversation. It gives humans words to describe things like relationship styles or deeper personality traits that are quite difficult to describe without some sort of base.

Unfortunately though, like everything, people can get caught up in that and take things too far. Confirmation bias is especially damning, where they favor details that match what they’re trying to get across. I also think it’s important to note that a lot of people who talk about zodiac signs place more importance on the way someone responds to bringing it up, rather than what sign they actually end up being.

Imagine telling someone something you don’t really believe in as 100% fact, but that you like the conversations that come with its discussion- and then they reply with anger telling you how stupid you are for bringing it up? That says a whole lot more than what month someone is born in.

My step dad discriminated against me because I was born on time. Ok, many times. /S

I dont believe in it at all but its just something people talk about to connect I think. It feels shallow but they mean well. There’s so many traits of a Leo I dont have, for example, but weirdly enough many people will guess Leo within 2 or 3 guesses.
But I agree. Many things influence the traits you have.

“I got promoted because I’m a Pisces” is the biggest load of shit I’ve ever heard. That did NOT happen my man

One of my favourite expressions I heard last year was that Astrology is “space racism” XD

Are you a Virgo by any chance? /s

  12. FatFarter69 Avatar

I always called astrology “birthday racism”.

Besides the fact that it is just discriminating against people for something they have no control over, it’s also just fucking stupid. Like really think about it, how in the name of fuck does being born at a certain time in the year shape your personality?

Genuinely people I’ve met who are into astrology are some of the least intelligent people I’ve ever met. They are one step away from telling me that the moon landing was fake or that the Earth is flat.

    It’s hippie bigotry.

  14. Bocchi_the_Minerals Avatar

This is true, but typically people who believe in astrology are too stupid to rise to positions of power where their discrimination can actually hurt others.

Idk if this is “unpopular” anymore. I don’t know anyone who’s into space racism these days. I want to upvote because I agree with you, but that’s not how this subreddit works.

I still don’t understand why some people think astrology is real. Like what proof is there you’re going to get a raise at work just because mercury and Venus are aligned? Lmfaooo

There’s a great episode of Orville where they visit a planet that does this. They put people born under a certain star sign in work camps because the star went nova and they took that as a sign.

  22. pink_ghost_cat Avatar

I don’t think it’s unpopular AT ALL. I see “haha stupid people believe in astrology”, “never date a girl who likes astrology, such a red flag” and so on every single day. “Discrimination based on birth day” is also a very common way to talk about it. So, what makes you think it’s an unpopular opinion? Apart from that one story from years ago that you decided to tell

    unpopular /ʌnˈpɒpjʊlə/
    adjective

    1. not liked or popular.

If you didn’t realise, OP. Most of the world does not, in fact, believe in astrology.
