Hey yall! I have a cold right now, on my first “bad” day of symptoms, and I’ve been pondering the worst symptom.
I know that many people think the worst symptom is the sore throat, but I think they are wrong. For me, its the blockage, inflammation, and mucus at the back of the nasal cavity. Every time I try to yap I get uncomfortable because of it. What do yall think?

Not a common one, but constant mucus production to the point where you can’t even sleep
I’d say the sore throat that feels like you’ve swallowed broken glass is up there.
Agreed. I hate the congestion.
Sore throat and a loud cough, sore throat is uncomfortable and a loud, painful cough makes me feel bad for disturbing other people :((
That first night where your throat gets so sore in the middle of the night to the point you’re wondering if you have a cold or strep
I think it’s not being able to breathe. If you have a sore throat and your sinus’s are blocked take a spoon full of honey.
Whatever symptom is making it so that in that moment I can’t sleep. Not being able to sleep while sick is the worst.
meh.. I’m not sure how unpopular of an opinion that is, although I do disagree with it.
I’ll grant you that’s right up there, but as someone who literally gave themselves a hernia coughing, I’m gonna say no.
I hate not being able to breathe through my nose, and when it honks from trying to inhale. Mouth breathing is the worst.
I Can cope with it all until the blocked nose stops me from sleeping.
Normal sore throat, you’re right. But I’ve gotten hit twice with the type that literally felt like broken glass was in my throat to the point I took my leftover painkillers from surgery. That’s the worst.
But normally, yeah the snot and stuffy nose so you can’t breathe is usually the worst.
Congestion 100%
I honestly agree. I always have to sleep with a wedge pillow to prop myself so I can breathe if I have a cold, but then the mucus goes down my throat and makes it raw, which is also terrible. The constant need to blow your nose is annoying as well. You clear it up finally, and bam! It’s back to being blocked. I like being able to breathe, man.
Definitely the mucus. I start to panic when I feel like I can’t breathe, so I’m usually hovering over a steam vaporiser when I’m sick. I can tolerate pain much better than feeling like I can’t breathe.
Sore throat is always the worst. I will take fevers any day, but when it’s hard to talk, eat, drink, and breathe? No thanks lol
For me it’s when my sinuses are so blocked it’s like there’s concrete in there.
I’ll take a sore throat over blocked nasal cavity any day.
If I have a sore throat, even the worst ones I’ve had have been able to be helped by ibuprofen and Tylenol. But stuffy nose? I need the good Sudafed. And I can’t take it because it makes my heart beat too hard.
I’d rather have a sore throat. Or fever. Or body aches. At least OTC pain meds help that. But I can’t tolerate pseudoephedrine even though it works so well.
The fact there’s nothing wrong with you and you’re just miserable. The symptoms are annoying. Put them all together and it’s fucking miserable.
Congestion. If I can’t breathe through my nose it’s game over for me
I hate it when it burns like crazy in your nasal passages. You can’t do anything, much less sleep which is the most important thing to do to recover
I’m not even that sick this time around like I was. Mine is the constant feeling of mucus going down from my nose to my throat 😔.
Being forced to read the bedtimes stories to your children.
I think the cough that lasts over a month is the worst one. At least for me, the sore throat lasts only a day or two but the cough is persistent. Literally would wake me up at night with a coughing fit. Cough medicine does nothing but at least hot tea and throat lozenges help with a sore throat. Congestion never really bothers me. I found that using nasal spray was a huge help the last time I was sick. Cleared me up within 20 minutes.
For me, it’s the feeling just before the cold hits. I literally know when I am getting cold cause the back of my throat/nasal cavity starts to feel weird, burning/like something bitter sticking there, hurting a little each time I try to swallow (I can’t really explain it in english. We have an entire word for this exact feeling in my native language)
I always find the worst symptom to be all the wining and bellyaching that goes on. Drink some oj and go to work.
