Festivals are held outdoors, cost a lot, involve a lot of queuing for basic things( like water and bathroom) and involve bigger crowds. The experience in general is pretty unpredictable.
The set time is also shorter, around an hour compared to usual hour and half (or more).
I just can’t bring myself to spend that much money for a single musician.

It can be annoying but they gotta make money somehow
It’s really venue dependent for me. I’d rather them do a festival than our football stadium or basketball arena, neither of which are optimized for music. I’d rather see them at a mid sized venue 10 minutes away from me over a festival.
I saw Metallica at Boston Calling fest, which was way better than if it had been at Gillette

Same. I didn’t go see usher in Abu Dhabi because he was at a festival even though I’ve wanted to see him live forever. I want a full usher concert not a set during a festival and it was outdoors in the desert in summer. Who does things like that? I was sad.
Yeah. This one I’ll agree with. Shorter sets, more hassle, etc.
I agree with this.
Also usually there’s a lot of time needed to see bands you’re not interested in.
I don’t think this is unpopular. Festivals are highly unpredictable out of a lineup of a dozen artists you might only care for 2
What is the difference? Just inside and outside?
To me, festival means various artists. I guess amnesty international was something completely different, but It had U2, the Police, Lou reed, and the Neville’s.
They were all good, but the act that got the asses out of the seats and shaking was Bryan Adams. I never was a fan, but his set set me straight. Of the people I have seen, I would compare it to the Ramones and ZZ Topp. It sounded the same live as it did in the studio.
I think a Taylor Swift concert would have something to say. These issues you speak of are also the same with indoor concerts. Her concert literally had people outside in lines without water.
When you have someone like Metallica or Taylor Swift, the line ques are large for preorder tickets.
If the artists you like are not well known then of course there is a visual difference to you.
Hard agree. Festivals by and large suck and are an overall subpar experience compared to an actual show.
wait artists go to your city???
(cries in northern europe)
Aren’t all of your complaints pretty much just what happens for concerts of anybody somewhat popular? I live in Indiana so the concerts are outside unless the person is rich enough to rent out Lucas oil or gainbridge and it’s not like lines are any less shorter lol
My main problem with festivals is that usually there are only maybe 2 or 3 artists I care about out of dozen or so that are there. And usually with the exception of the headliner, the crowds are usually dead
I’ve been noticing a new thing in my area where it’s marketed as a ‘festival’ but it’s just a really long concert or two nights of shows, often indoors.
On the surface it’s kind of a neat idea, and probably a good way for smaller acts to get exposure and make some money (although how much those smaller acts actually get probably varies wildly).
But yeah my problem starts when it’s prohibitively expensive with no options other than buying an entire festival ticket. And sometimes there’s not even re-entry, which is crazy. My partner went to one without re-entry and there was no food. A bunch of people stuck inside all day and you don’t even offer an option to purchase food? I actually thought that was illegal.
I’m sure venues absolutely love having people trapped in their bar for hours and hours with nothing to do except watch music they may or may not be there to see and drink expensive beer. It’s not very patron-friendly though, I wish they’d stop acting like it is.
