Armageddon is amazing

r/

Never before has a movie crystallised the difference between academic knowledge and practical. There are so many skills/vocations that people think are simple but actually take a whole load of experience to master.

Drilling is hard. NASA did the right thing getting experienced drillers over astronauts.

Drilling is not hard. Have you ever encountered a drilling rig hand in the wild before?

Enjoy a drunken Ben Affleck doing commentary on the film, it will make you love it even more!

But they’re literally just drilling holes. It’s on an asteroid, they don’t have to worry about protecting the environment or the product or anything that a long term drilling operation would have to care about.

They probably could have just shown some astronauts a Power Point about how to use the drill.

It’s funny that the recent DART mission showed that all you really have to do is hit an asteroid to send it off course.

In the movie they make the firecracker analogy saying “you burn your hand”, but dont think about the force applied and resulting change in trajectory.

I loved the scene at the beginning when they’re brainstorming and the one guy who proposed the idea of implanting the bomb inside ridicules the other scientists who only got a C in their school years XD

Someone tell OP it didnt really happen.

I kind of feel like my friend who got selected to be an astronaut, who i met when we were in the military together, wouldnt really have much trouble learning any technical or skilled trade (for a direct purpose) as a former fighter pilot.
