Has anyone else noticed the leniency parents get when their child drowns in a pool? It’s appalling whenever I see a post about children drowning at home because the mother or father forgot to lock the gate or just straight up don’t have a gate. Then all the comments are “Prayers to the family 🙏”
I have sympathy for the child. Absolutely none for the families. They should be charged with negligence the same way parents who leave a kid in a hot car are. It’s crazy how often these drownings are seen on social media but I never see any talk about families being punished.
Genuinely if you hated your child and wanted to get rid of them, all you would have to do is not teach them how to swim & then “forget to lock the gate” or leave them outside by the pool alone. Sad thing is I guarantee this has been done before by many hateful parents that have got away with it.

What does this achieve? All you are doing is making a family who just had a devastating loss even more harm by now saying “Well it’s all your fault and you are a horrible person” when 99% of times it was a mistake because they were distracted by said child.
I think what happened is already punishment enough.
Downing kids kills me inside. Seen one die in vacation in Hawaii. Everyone tried CPR but it didn’t work, and by the time the firemen came they casually walked in, knowing it was already too late. So sad.
You just reminded me to call the city to fix their fence around the local storm pond.
Parents can be charged with criminal negligence or manslaughter (depending on the state) if a child dies because of an unsecured gun; so I think in fact you’re right – the law should apply in a similar manner.
“Prayers to the family” can also apply to siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.
Legitimate anti-social/sociopath opinion. The whole world isn’t full of people secretly trying to drown their kids.
Kids are wild and exhausting and clever and inventive and they spend years learning about the world by finding unbelievable ways around barriers. Parents doing their absolute best still have kids that get in accidents.
Thinking they should be punished on top of what they already suffer is absolutely nuts. Take a break from the internet.
agreed. it should be treated as criminal negligence.
It’s like saying “parents should be charged with negligence if their child is driving their car and gets killed by another driver” What are they going to do… not teach them how to drive? Many things are outside of our control, I’m sure many parents whose child has died by drowning did not expect their child to die
That video in NYC of a father and child getting out of the car and he’s just letting his kid run out into the bike lane…and she got run over by an e-bike.
A lot of the comments were about the e-bike, but it was entirely the father’s fault
Adults have drowned in kiddie pools, pools are dangerous. If there was negligence, sure, but it only takes 60 seconds for a kid to drown if you dont know cpr.
Kids have drowned in pools owned by people that don’t even have kids. Kids hop fences and swim in pools without permission, trespassing etc.
Even with a fence and gates. Kids can dry drown too. They inhale a lil water, you think their ok, and they pass out from lack of Oxygen when going to bed cuz the water never came out of their vocal cord area and closes their airway in their sleep.
Kids of all ages drown. Our local park had 4 highschoolers go swimming in the pond and they all drowned, they got stuck on the drain to the creek, pond says no swimming.
If someones toddler walked outside snd walked into the pool and drowned, then yeah, I agree kinda.
But a 6 year old should know better.
And kids diving into 4′ deep pools head first and breaking their necks, despite being told not to 1000000 times… Darwinism.
