Employers who complain about people being “overqualified” are just lazy, cheap, or enjoy abusing their employees

r/

I have yet to see a GOOD reason for rejecting an “overqualified” person that isn’t making a massive assumption. People don’t leave because they’re overqualified, they leave because the job is shitty and has shitty pay.

And it’s stupid how companies expect employee loyalty when they’ll drop you in a heartbeat

Best case I have seen is if I get a job that I am overqualified for, then chances are I am just using it as a placeholder until I get the actual job I am looking for. An employer is not interested in an employee that is completely indifferent towards the job, who they then spent a bunch of resources training, just for them to leave after two months.

People who are over qualified are not just getting “shitty pay” they are getting the pay for the job they were hired for.

I’ll give you an example. If I’m hiring for a senior accountant at $90k, I’m not going to hire someone who has been a Controller for the last 5 years because they are going to expect the pay for a controller, not a senior accountant. They want controller pay for a senior accountant job. We’re not going to hire a senior accountant at a controller salary, we already have a controller at controller pay. Just because the person applying for the senior accountant also qualifies for the controller job doesn’t mean I’m going to pay them like they are the controller, when they are doing the senior accountant job.

When you explain that, they say they understand, but they leave 6 months later because they finally found another Contoller job at the pay their skill set warrants and I’m stuck with an open position again.

That’s why company’s don’t want to hire people who are over qualified.
