The cattiness, the name-calling, the back-stabbing, the “reading”… I know, roasts are a thing… but coupled with everything else, it’s all just SO NEGATIVE. And the whole premise is supposedly based upon inclusivity and acceptance, which gives an air of disingenuous throughout.

And for the record, I wholeheartedly support the LGBTQIA+ community. This isn’t about that.
You’ve just described reality tv, cause none of this is exclusive to drag race
That’s just reality TV in general, it’s just a bunch of drama plots
This reminds of that ‘Heroes of Cosplay’ show that was around for a bit. The younger me (13 or 14) was so excited to see it because I was just getting into cosplay at the time and it was a massive disappointment due to all the shit talk there was. Online was always like “help each other and life each other up” and the show was the total opposite with behind the back shit talk and just… disappointed the younger me.
That’s basically just a lot of American reality tv.
Drag Race is way past its prime imo.
I’ve never heard this take before.
Yeah I hate it. I love drag queens and so many wonderful people in that show are now doing awesome stuff that I enjoy thoroughly. But I do not like the drama of the drag race at all.
I’ll make an assumption that’s it’s the US series you’re watching, I felt the same. Try the UK, Canadian or Oz serieses. They aren’t as heavily edited for that ‘over the top drama’ effect, and focus more on the humour, artistic and supportive parts of the show.
It’s why the great British bake off n sewing bee were so popular people were positive, encouraging n it was all just NICE..
We’ve had enough of Simon cowell n his brand of assholes shattering dreams n bullying people for “good telly”
…Thats exactly why people like it.
I mean RuPaul himself is also a shit person. I wish he wasn’t considered such an icon when there are so many other better drag queens that can do better drag competitions.
Personally I prefer Dragula.
Well that’s what the reality tv genre is. It’s not real
That’s the point, it’s enterTAINTment hunty!
Plus it’s a bunch of men fetishizing womanhood.
tbh i agree, i watched drag race italy and was fine, when i went to america’s drag race i couldn’t get into it tbh
Mistress’s impact
I have nothing against cross dressers and fully support LGBT+ people but yeah, RP drag race is insipid garbage that I feel actively dumber when I watch it, so I don’t. Much like “reality” TV that I also don’t watch
If you enjoy drag I would recommend the french series. Especially the 2nd season.
It’s boring and kitsch. It’s not my taste at all
God I thought I was the only one!
Honestly RuPaul’s Drag Race gives a very negative perception of drag queens imo.
Like I’ve watched a couple of episodes because my mom likes the show, and every episode I’m just like “Why is every person on this show a catty bitch?”
Also istg… Every dude’s drag persona in that show is just “What if I was a woman who was a bitch?”
It’s so icky!
Drag race hasn’t been good since Season 10
I agree. You can do positive things without doing so at the expense of others. It seems that in many American media there always have to be a winner and a corresponding punching bag
Drag as an entity is built on thick skins and reading one another, it’s a byproduct of being truly ostracized and fringe members of society.
I don’t know how much you have seen of the show, but there are plenty of moments that speak to the pain, love, and strength of the queer community. Literally just look up drag race heartfelt moments on YouTube, it’s a key tenet of the show.
Drag culture is ingrained in reading and shade, but most of it is light hearted. Of course in a reality tv setting this isn’t always the case but that might be more of an indictment on competition shows than drag itself.
I don’t think you understand it at all and you shouldn’t speak on things you don’t understand. Banter isn’t cruelty. Also how are you surviving as a straight man if you can’t cope with friendly banter? That’s like 100% of how straight men communicate. But when queer people do it suddenly it’s unpleasant and negative? Grow up a bit maybe
