TIFU By falling asleep when my parents werent home..

r/

For context I am still a teenager and not a full grown responsible adult

So This started when my parents had to go for some work at 6pm and as usual I wasnt gonna accompany them so I was left home alone , their work got done and they decided to hit up my uncle who lived down 4 miles ahead.

Inspite of knowing this my dumb self thought to take support of a pillow on my head and lay in a sleeping position while watching a football game.

Eventually the game got boring and I started to fall asleep , (my parents usually dont take keys with them as i am responsible) I FELL ASLEEP fast forward i wake to the door getting knocked aggressively or should i say very aggressively i check my phone and theres 39 missed calls by my parents , and when i open the door there’s my pissed mom who calls my dad because he couldnt keep up and had to go get in the car.

Now it turns out I am not going to be home alone from now and also the cause of a broken doorbell.

TL;DR: – Op fell asleep while parents werent home for 2 hours which resulted in pissed parents and a broken doorbell

They should have taken a key

    They should carry keys.

You didn’t fuck up. Your parents did.

They are adults, and no matter what, they should not leave home without their house keys. What if something had happened to you, they would just stand outside like, I don’t know I guess he’ll just die in there.

    YOU DID NOT FUCK UP!

You’re more responsible than them. You’re telling me they left at 6PM for hours and expected you to just be awake whenever they got home and didn’t even have a house key? Nah absolutely not. They need a key of their own.

Ya you didn’t mess up at all. They can give a key if they don’t want to carry one.

This is why we have house keys this is just plain stupid

NAFU. Or at least, not your fault. Your parents should keep house keys when they leave the house in case of emergencies. What if you fall asleep (as you did)? What if you had to leave? What if you had a medical emergency? Adults should be able to prepare to be self-sufficient in everyday situations like getting into their own house, and it’s not your fault that your parents utterly failed at this. Good luck with them, and learn from this so you can be better than them.

Why don’t your parents have their own key?

It’s not about you being responsible. It’s about your parents being irresponsible.

Nothing of this is your fault.

This reads like when my ex and I traveled to an amusement park (4 hour drive) and at some point in the evening her parents called her becsuse they wanted to be picked up from a bar although they knew we were on a day trip.
They made it her fault for not having been home.

The only person who screwed up here was your parents. For the life of me I cannot fathom why one of them wouldn’t have a house key. You were NOT irresponsible in any way. THEY were irresponsible.

Either they leave the door unlocked or they take keys

Why would they assume you would be able to get to the door or even hear them at the door? You could be showering, sleeping (like what happened), or dead. You could be vomiting your guts out, has a stroke, or listening to music with headphones. There’s hundreds of ways you could be unable to hear them.

You aren’t responsible for their stupidity. They are.

I know this isn’t AITA, but you aren’t the asshole here. Your family needs to keep a hidden key or something? How the hell did they break the doorbell? Its not your job to be a doorman for your family.

You parents suck. Not your fault; you were asleep. Their fault for not having their keys.

This exact same thing happened to me as a teenager. Had locked the doors when I got home from school and fell asleep on the couch (I think I had my headphones in too). Dad got home from work and I woke up to him angrily standing over me. Apparently he had been knocking like crazy and I didn’t answer. He then came in through another door that I had apparently forgotten to lock. It was terrifying how he was standing over me so angrily, and he gestured like he was going to hit me but then stopped right before he made contact with my face. As an adult I realize how fucking ridiculous it is to physically threaten your kid over that. He should’ve had a damn key.
