TIFU By dropping a ladder on my moms car.

Throwaway account, I just wanted to do a good thing for my mom

17M turning 18 this month. My mom takes pride in her lawn but can’t do it anymore due to back issues due to medical malpractice. Sometimes I get paid $40–$50, sometimes I don’t. I don’t mind since it’s a good workout, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the money. After an argument between me and my older sister, she cut the lawn to appease our mom since she wasn’t doing anything.

The next time I tried cutting it, I had to grab the materials she placed willy nilly. This time my mom was home from being on the ship, so I had to move around her car to grab the stuff. I COULD have asked her to move it, but it normally isn’t hard. But this time when I opened the door, our ladder fell directly on her car (from my perspective it opened inward, which pushed the ladder). I didn’t even try to stop the inevitable, I just closed my eyes and started shaking. It was 2 small dents. My sister admitted to moving it on the door, not on purpose, but told me to keep it a secret. It was via text so I screenshotted it and have it saved.

During the car ride to my graduation’s practice schedule, she saw it. I was about to fold and admit everything thanks to my guilty conscience, but she said, “Who tf hit my car? I hate living here because everyone can’t open their car doors without hitting mine.” I quickly started behaving how I did the last time this happened for real. I said, “People of (state name) really can’t drive huh? Not everyone should be driving.” My internal narrator, was screaming “hypocrite!” (I can’t be the only one that has one right?)

My mom agreed with my comment. I asked if she can teach me how to fix it since I’m getting my own car soon. As if it wasn’t a knife twist already, my mom said, “You’ll be fine as long as you don’t hit people’s cars.” I laughed it off and said, “Oh yeah haha,” and moved the conversation to studying for my learner’s permit test. I rarely lie to my mom, but this is different, I would be crucified! I hate lying to her, but she seemed to take it well.

TL;DR: After my sister cut the grass for the first time, she placed a ladder on the door inside the garage. When I opened it to cut it next, the ladder fell on my mom’s car. She assumed someone hit her car since it landed on the side.
