Watermelons have become too sweet

r/

As a long time fan of watermelon, the center has become disgustingly sweet. I actually prefer to eat close to the rind now. I think this is unpopular because I haven’t heard this opinion before but also haven’t had conversations about it either.

Buy one in the winter, the greenhouse ones are less sweet. Give it a try next time

That’s because you’re eating GMO processed USA bred watermelons. Visit Mexico and try one, or import organic mexican watermelon. Even the taste is different. Honestly, nothing against GMO, it’s needed in order to feed sooooo many people. But, hear me out, the bounty of the Earth is non comparable.

Just rub it in all our faces that you always find ripe watermelons.

    🤣

Take my upvote. “I like worse tasting things” is an unpopular opinion.

Try the yellow ones they tend to be a tad milder in my opinion

Haven’t been able to get a good watermelon for years. The early season ones come up from Texas or Mexico and taste like cucumbers. Mid season we can find locals that are bit or miss. Late season they are almost always rotten inside.

    Sucks.

The opposite is in fact true. Not an opinion, factual truth, that watermelons are getting LESS sweet. The seedless watermelons that are most popular in grocery stores are terrible. No seeds but also NO FLAVOR.

Gotta get a big fat one full of seeds at the roadside stands if you want sweet.

I was gonna complain while I was in bed, but I’m gonna snuggle this watermelone instead

I need to shop where you shop. I can’t find a sweet watermelon to save my life lately!

I kindof agree? I think you gotta find the right watermelon. Most people’s idea of a ‘perfectly ripe’ watermelon is too ripe in my opinion. They’re mushy and too sweet. I usually look for one that’s a little more yellow than all the others and it’s awesome that way. Nice and crunchy and a little sour but it still has that watermelon flavor rather than just tasting like sugar water.

There are a lot of melons that are lighter on sugar and have a great melon taste. Golden Honeydew, Canary Melons, and I think you’d dig the Santa Claus melon
