Supernatural for when I’m feeling moody because it’s from my moody years, Criminal Minds for when I’m tired, can’t stand looking at the screen, and want something familiar, and The Big Bang Theory or Golden Girls when I want something fun in the background.
“Return to Me”, starring David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. It’s a romance movie.
Duchovny’s wife (who he’s devoted to) dies in a car accident at the beginning of the movie. A year later he’s recovered enough to dip his toes into the dating pool again. He meets and falls in love with a waitress (Driver) who received his wife’s donated heart. The story develops as they discover that connection and what it means to them.
That’s a special movie to me because I’m getting married on Saturday to a man who lost his previous fiancée in the same way. It’s my comfort movie in the sense that it validates my decision to come in as his new partner (even though there’s no organ donation involved.)
Sex and the city because I never was able to find that close knit group of female friends bc my dumbass was so boy crazy. Let me tell all the ladies in here that that is not the way to go. Take care of your friendships. 😫🥺 thanks for listening.
show: if im just down in the dumps or not feeling well and want something familiar that’s well-loved by me, it’s nbc hannibal, criminal minds, or house. if im actually losing my shit (very sick, migraine, or extremely depressed), i put on ~2015 era gamegrumps playthroughs. it’s so nostalgic that it kind’ve lulls me to sleep.
movie: treasure planet or true grit. the explanation for those two is simple- daddy issues 😭
Gilmore Girls— it always feels comforting and cozy! Edit to add: Stars Hollow and all of its sweet and funny inhabitants make me smile, the town itself feels like a character, and I love watching the dynamic between Lorelei and Luke.
FRIENDS. It was my go-to show when my parents were going through divorce, and it’s still my go-to show on down days. No matter how many times I watch it, it remains consistently funny.
Aside from that, I also rewatch Scrubs and Parks and Rec.
There’s something so incredibly comforting about that show. I’ve seen it a million times and it’s not super important to pay attention to what’s happening.
It feels like you’re apart of their little girl group, like these characters are your friends, and the early 2000s NYC aesthetic feels so familiar and unstimulating.
Young Sheldon. It’s something we can watch with the kids and the blend of great characters, smart humor, sometimes serious themes, and 80s/90s nostalgia is the perfect combo.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy because I can so easily get lost in them and there are so many layers of wisdom and lore, and while everything really sucks throughout the series, it’s all still so beautiful and everything works out in the end. Plus, when my depression is hitting hard, Gandalf’s and Samwise’s speeches about continuing on even when everything seems dark and hopeless feel like they’re talking to me.
Bridget Jones Diary. Specifically the 1st movie and 2nd. Just something about the realistic setting in the first movie. The weather. The city scene. All of it. Early 2000s no social media mentioned. Just living.
How I Met Your Mother is my programme, Marshall is my comfort character.
Movies: LOTR trilogy, Harry Potter movies, Pirates of the Caribbean movies 1-3, Pride & Prejudice (w Kiera Knightley), Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away.
Why do they hit so hard? Because I was a kid/teenager when most of these came out and I just remember feeling like the world was so magical and full of adventure because of them. They are fun to watch and tickle and comfort my brain with nostalgia.
Shows: Community, Bob’s Burgers, and Fruits Basket
Why do they hit so hard? Because Community and BB are fucking hilarious and full of heart. FB because, again, I was a teenager when the manga was coming out and geez was I obsessed. Although my crush on Kyo has shifted to Shigure and Hatori hehe.
PS yes I’m in my 30s, a millennial through and through
Good witch. Cozy fall vibes, things rarely go wrong and when they do they don’t really go wrong. It is the visual embodiment of a psl or chai latte. Comfort. Kindness. A little humor. A little romance. A little dose of good parenting.
I’ve got quite a few and just depends on my mood and who I wanna revisit 😬 but some are Bobs Burgers, The Middle, The Golden Girls, Schitt’s Creek, Friends, I Love Lucy, King of the Hill (among others). Movies: The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, The Parent Trap, Toy Story 2, The Wedding Singer, Friday, Matilda, The Devil Wears Prada, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s so grim and dark for so much of the film that it makes my life feel easier, and then when Vidal finally, finally gets comeuppance, it feels so good.
The Walking Dead (but only up to roughly Alexandria, pre-Negan). I just love these characters so much. I’ve also seen the early bits several times at this point, so just watching these high-stakes situations while also knowing how things end is comforting. The Negan era changes things because I hate having to watch Rick Grimes and fucking Daryl Dixon take Negan’s bullshit.
On a similar note, and for similar reasons, Criminal Minds. Last summer, I watched the first few episodes of the newer version of the show on an airplane. I was hella stressed for a lot of different reasons, but within the first few minutes of the show (a serial killer has kidnapped a family, I think, and is torturing them in a shipping container, and at one point, there’s a shot of blood splashing against a wall), I was feeling better. Emily Prentiss, man. Emily Prentiss.
Before Sunrise always warms my heart. It’s such a simple, beautiful movie. Not a lot happens, but it really captures that feeling of young love. You know they only have one night together before her train leaves, and they might never see each other again, but they still take the time to really connect and have deep conversations. It’s so fragile, so beautiful, and feels so real.
It’s one of my favorite movies, and definitely the one I reach for when I’m lonely and feel like I need a hug.
Anything you might find on Nick at Nite or TVLand.
Hogan Heroes, Green Acres, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Dick Van Dyke Show, Golden Girls, WKRP, Taxi, Beverly Hillbillies, I Love Lucy.
Old school cartoons, too. Flintstones, Jetsons, Ricky and Bullwinkle, Yogi Bear, Looney Tunes.
Growing up, my dad was the master of the TV, so we watched what he watched, and he watched Nick at Nite and later TVLand. He also liked Saturday morning cartoons. The old ones.
Watching those shows, it’s like being a kid again. The worst that might happen is Timmy might fall down the well, but it’s OK, Lassie will save him.
Living single and golden girls. I think it’s because I grew up watching them and it was the epitome of what a happy successful adult life should be. Strong social circle , friendship, welcoming home environment and bonding, and in real life it’s Instagram memes and texts from friends hundreds of miles away, and binge watching TV series, an endless scrolling on instagram. Social media really cooked our generation. And the ones behind us
Ouran High School Host Club because it was the first anime I watched back when I was about 12.
Alternatively, Toradora. It’s my favorite romcom anime by far, and the characters are made so well it really feels like watching a story with real people unfold.
Netflix She Ra: a random kaleidoscope of weirdos, almost all of whom are queer, and often have tension in their “good” relationships, let alone tense allies or temporarily aligned parties, who manage to destroy a genocidal Pentacostal anti gay conversion hive mind with the power of love and weirdness.
Schitt’s Creek: just words don’t do it justice, for me
Adachi to Shimamura: super boring and nearly nothing happens, but Adachi hits me in the feels more than probably any other anime or manga protagonist.
Scrubs: combination of being pretty popular when I was younger and impressionable, and still considering medicine. Not to mention the whole cast’s chemistry.
Becker: titular character and the intern were just so good.
since no one has mentioned it yet, greys anatomy. esp the first 5-6 seasons. for some reason hospital shows calm me, and the added interpersonal drama is super well done.
Big Fish & Secondhand Lions. They are both just healing in a way. I watched them religiously as a child so it just makes sense that they are my comfort movies.
Parks and Rec. It’s goofy but sweet, and the cast just works perfectly. No matter how many times I rewatch it, I am always entertained and comforted. It’s like a soothing balm to my frazzled soul.
Seinfeld. I grew up watching with my family and it’s an easy, funny watch. Never gets old for me. I especially like watching with my parents when I visit home and reliving all the jokes together.
She Devil. There’s something so satisfying with the scenery, but the plot is so diabolical and refreshing that I can watch it anytime. Plus Meryl Streep. Enough said.
Desperate Housewives, I love the storyline, the narration and it’s hilarious. I laugh out loud throughout each episode. That & Jane the Virgin, for all of the same reasons.
schitt’s creek cause its literally the funniest show ever and i love the dynamic of the rose family also my comfort movie is high school musical 3 cause it feels so hopeful and the music is soooo good

My sister recently told me that she noticed when I am going through something I start rewatching The Golden Girls with something random, like a show by Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Feud, Scream Queens).
I guess to balance it out?
She noticed this because I had my own profile on her Disney+ account, lol.
I went through some stuff the last 5 or so years, and I will freely admit The Golden Girls are both a warm hug and reality check blended into well cast sitcom.
Add on the horror side of Ryan Murphy’s producing and it kind of makes sense.
I’m not sure why. It has a lot of different human moments in the way so many characters react to the shark. Just the right amount of thrill, comedy, action, and emotion. It reminds me of lazy Sunday movies with my mom.
I have a few shows that Ive rewatched multiple times: Bones, Teen Wolf, Grimm, Community, and The Legend of Vox Machina. I mostly love the action and comedy in all of them
Movies: Train to Busan will forever be my favorite movie. It has action, and emotion. I love it so much
For some reason I really enjoy the friendship of Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro in that movie and how he brings this calming energy into her life. I watched the movie with my girlfriend the other day and we realized that we have a similar dynamic to them only on a romantic level.
Shows: X-Files (Mulder & Scully’s voices are so soothing); Breaking Bad (just very familiar and I like having it on in the background); Red Dwarf (my favourite comedy I grew up watching); Heartland (feel-good and I love horses).
Movies: Lord of the Rings trilogy (obvious reasons, I’ve read a lot of Tolkien, big fan); Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (I can probably recite most of this one by heart); 101 Dalmations original animated (I love this old animation style and dogs); Aristocats (the style and I like cats, it’s also just cute idk; Fox and the Hound (for those days I need a good cry); Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (do I really need to explain?).
There’s more in each and it depends on my mood, but those are usually my go-to.
I don’t have one specific but my comfort shows are all types of creative competition shows. Blown away, Cupcake wars, The big flower fight, etc. Just put on a show, plant my butt on the couch, and binge all day.
Friends , it’s like a warm hug with laughs. The characters feel like old friends, and no matter how rough the day, it’s always comforting to escape to their world. Plus, the humor never gets old.
I recently watched Younger and it was really a fun and easy watch. Definitely gave me more network tv friendly SATC vibes in a way. I also really enjoy How I Met Your Mother because it kind of reflected where I was in life at the beginning of the show and at the end. I also still can’t get enough Parks and Recreation and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Not a Show or a Movie but an album: Euphories by Videoclub. I like it a lot because the feelings of nostalgia almost? I have not even listened to it for a year yet, but it is one of my most listened to albums according to last.fm. The lyrics deeply resonate with me, and the feelings are intense but beautiful.
Mrs Winterbourne! I grew up with a single mom and I think I just really romanticized the idea of a charming husband like Brendan Fraser in this one. Swoooon.

A marriage story. Watched it during my first marriage to a lady, who was in a years long custody battle with her son.
When Scarlett’s character tied his shoe in the end, even though their knot was undone…. too damn sad.
Sex and the city because I never was able to find that close knit group of female friends bc my dumbass was so boy crazy. Let me tell all the ladies in here that that is not the way to go. Take care of your friendships. 😫🥺 thanks for listening.
Bridgerton. The accents. The music. It lulls me to sleep without invading my dreams like too many other shows can do.
Emily in Paris. It’s light hearted and I like looking at clothes. Same with the sex and the city movies.
Friends because I miss my friends 😭
Bofuri: I Don’t Want To Get Hurt So I’ll Max Out My Defense
