Grew up in a terrible environment, parents were divorced and extremely abusive in every way. They had 50/50 custody. One side was extremely religious and the other side was anti religion. Both sides were terrible in different ways. None of them are dead but as a child I did wish they were.
These days I’m married and have a great family of my own. My parents try to have a relationship with me like nothing happened.

Have you cut off your parents?
You don’t have to answer this if it’s too upsetting? but I’m wondering how the anti-religious side abused you? I’m more familiar with religious abuse, so I wonder what was going on on the other side.
What do you mean homeless and addicted all from your parents? Did they force substance on you? I’ve heard this happen in families involved with cults.
What kept you going? Was there anyone who stepped in and helped?
I grew up in backwards shit conditions as well. It took a lifetime to unlearn everything I picked up from my family as a kid, and I am still stopping in social land mines to this day at 52. Now life is sweet, something I never expected in life. I waitress till 47 to have a child, she is beautiful as her mom and I’m happy to know her world will never be like mine. Still love my parents because they are my only parents, but oh my fuck are they wrong about a great many things, at least now I know. I’m glad you made it out ok.
I suspect you have figured this out already, but never forget that our lives do not, in anyway have to become like the lives of our parents, or anyone else for that matter.
