What is your opinion on cruises?

Hey everyone, I just got back from a cruise with my family and I wanted to know what is your opinion on them?

Fantastic value for what you get. Also the ability to, without great expense, be completely unreachable cannot be overstated.

I’ve only been on two but the feeling of throwing my cell phone in the room safe and not touching it all week was amazing

  3. Efficient-Log8009 Avatar

I’ve been on few and didn’t enjoy it. There’s no freedom to explore. You’re like on a leash to do go out only when they let you for a few hours or they’ll leave without you. I prefer to travel with complete freedom.

  4. VladTheBanned Avatar

Bump for visibility. I’ve never been on one. Is the internet connection solid? Can you properly work remotely from the ship when it’s in open waters?

  5. RoCNOD Avatar

Do not go on Cruises. I was a Tanker Mate for a while. You do not belong out there. You’re not trained. We invented planes for a reason. Do not be a fool.

  6. No_Maize_230 Avatar

Not my cup of tea. Feels like a lot of forced fun activities when you get on the ship.

  7. Outis918 Avatar

Cruises are lame. I get seasick so I can’t do boats. But either way I’d prefer a normal vacation.

  8. Wise-Dinner-6885 Avatar

Since i work at sea spending money to be on a ship on my time off isn’t exactly my cup of tea 😂

  9. YardAddams Avatar

I really enjoyed it. I like getting away and I like that it’s this small little community for a few days. As long as you enjoy meeting new people and just doing activities then it’s good.

  10. Illustrious_One9088 Avatar

I liked the last solo cruise from Helsinki to Stockholm, it’s pretty fun in a way.

  11. Ruben_001 Avatar

Depends where its too and who else is on board; can be great, can be awful.

  12. merp_mcderp9459 Avatar

There are generally better ways to spend your money. The most memorable parts of my one and only cruise were the buffet foods and trying my first beer in Mexico (and hating it b/c it was Corona, which I maintain is an awful beer)

  13. Switchgamer1970 Avatar

    Very not interested.

  14. LordAlfrey Avatar

From what I’ve heard, they pollute like crazy (something like cruise ships in Europe pollute 4 times as much as all cars in Europe combined) and sometimes do some sketchy shit by abusing laws on international waters (drugs, deaths at sea).

The experience itself is nice, the amenities of a resort with a nice scenery change, and depending on the cruise maybe you stop over at some tourist spots.

  15. hoarduck Avatar

I see lots of responses about cruises that sound like Disney or Mediterranean – what do people think about Alaskan cruises? Where the point is the view.

  16. StreetSea9588 Avatar

I would never do this. They sound awful.

  17. Bot_Ring_Hunter Avatar

What cruise did you take with your family? When did you go? What is your opinion on it?

  18. Afraid_Sample1688 Avatar

I don’t much like cruises to the Caribbean. The islands are much the same and so it gets redundant.

What I like doing cruises for is as a ‘tasting menu’ for a region I have not visited. I have been to 20 places in the Med and 30 places around South America because of cruises. Now I return to those I really enjoyed and skip those I did not.

I hope to do a circumnavigation cruise around Japan – then go for a long vacation there once I know what I really want to experience.

The cruise ship is a bubble though. You won’t get the genuine local experience anywhere. But you can get the sense of the places.

  19. chugachugachewy Avatar

Dislike because I don’t like the view of ocean. Sure the sunsets are nice but during the day? It’s just blue.

Then add in the fact that you’re on a ship with thousands of strangers. Nah.

  20. Hrekires Avatar

My parents like them but they also seem to return from every one with some kind of cold or stomach bug.

  21. Responsible_Oil_5811 Avatar

I’ve never been on one, but someday I would like to go on a Disney cruise. I’m a big Disney fan!

  22. typewrytten Avatar

Been on two (not by my choice)

The second I can’t see any land, I panic. Being surrounded by nothing by deep ocean? Not for me. I love the water and the beach, but nope nope nope.

  23. ElegantMankey Avatar

Its a good option if you want a relaxing trip which is not my cup of tea usually.

  24. Blackened-One Avatar

One of the biggest sources of ocean pollution. Might as well go out shooting polar bears and taking a hammer to the coral reefs.

    They’re a lot like the movie, WALL-E.

Went on a 14 night Carribean cruise for my honeymoon. Wife loves beach holidays. She wants to fly somewhere sunny, book into an all-inclusive on the beach, and do nothing for a week. That drives me nuts. I want to go and experience new places and different cultures. Visit interesting sites, museums etc.

It was an excellent compromise. She got the all-inclusive experience (plus she got to just chill by the pool when we had sea days or weren’t getting off the ship). I got to go see new places and do things. It really was the best of both worlds.

We’ve booked another cruise for next year, this time 10 days in the Mediterranean

Tendrían que desaparecer. Parecen borregos a bordo que inundan las ciudades unas horas. Turismo cutre.

  28. GreenSalsa96 Avatar

Really enjoyed a Disney Cruise I took with my wife and family a few years ago. Seriously HUGE bill, but everyone still talks about it!

10 out of 10 experience, will do it again some day!

My wife wants it annually, I think we might be able to afford it once a decade (now), the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

  29. day9700 Avatar

    No thanks.
I’m petrified by the deep, open ocean. And at night? Forget it!
It’s like being trapped in a floating city.
Everything is so expensive (son just went on one, not by choice…gf’s family reunion) and they charged for every little thing and internet access was $35 a day!
You barely have time to check out the places you stop at because you only have six hours or so.
    Feels like a Petri dish.

A river cruise, now I’d be willing to try one of those! I can see land, and there’s not thousands of people on it.

Edit to add about river cruises.

  30. RealKenny Avatar

I’ve only been once, but we had a great time

  31. Tokogogoloshe Avatar

Some girl took me on one once. Man was I bored after two days. It was like a floating old age home with drunk people on it. I ended up playing volleyball with the Italian crewmembers.

So, not my cup of sea.

  32. Mobile_Turnover6773 Avatar

I have never been on one and it doesn’t really appeal to me. It sounds like a floating shopping mall.

  33. Dangerous_Pie_3338 Avatar

I love them. Once you pay everything is basically taken care of, minus anything you buy in ports or at shops on the ships. Food, a place to stay, and transportation between destinations. I think the idea of a resort in the middle of the ocean is also cool and the views are great as are the amenities, depending on the ship of course. I think it’s also a great way to see multiple destinations. I also really like using the gyms on the ships.

  34. DataGOGO Avatar

Love them, but the time of year makes a big difference. We never go in the summer when the kids are out of school. Fuck that.

  35. vexillifer Avatar

Floating cesspool full of the lowest common denominator type of traveller. Avoid at all costs.

  36. DavidJ____ Avatar

The only way I vacation. I bring my family on a Royal Caribbean every February. I have done all inclusives but prefer cruising. I will say I’m aware of the environmental impacts but I do my part to not waste food, energy or water to the best of my ability.

  37. warranpiece Avatar

Kids like cruises. And I get it. They can be a relatively nice deal, and are very easy.

But two things are going to keep me from ever doing them again.

1). Pollution. Look into it. Its wild. I mean it’s shocking how much pollution is generated.

    1. The people working these things are not given basic workers rights. It’s also quite shocking. Some governments (looking at you Philippines), even have agreements to “pre-resolve” things such as dismemberment of their people for set dollar amounts. It’s really pretty terrible for the rank and file. And the laws around these ships also mean there is a lot of leeway on what can be enforced and how.

I’m out on cruises. I’m just not a cruise guy by culture I think either.

  38. kuzosake Avatar

The girlfriend and I also just got back from one last week. My first time. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. I would do it again someday.

  39. BaldyBaldyBouncer Avatar

When I am on holiday I sleep in the hotel and that’s about it, spend the rest of the time out and about exploring. Being stuck on a floating hotel doesn’t really appeal to me. I know you can get off at each port and explore but I have seen how predatory tour companies are around cruise guests as soon as they step of the boat.

A lot of people enjoy them though.

  40. UserJH4202 Avatar

I’m not a fan of cruises. I travel a lot and usually stay in one place for a while to really get the “feel” of the place. Cruises can’t offer me that. I usually cook my own food so rent a homestay with a kitchen. Cruises can’t offer me that. I have an actual bias against people that do “Bucket List” trips, checking off Instagram moments do they can tell their friends rather than really immersing oneself into another country’s culture. And most cruises are huge – hotels in the water. I took a week’s cruise once around the Dalmatian Cosst (Croatian coast) but the ship had only 17 cabins for a max of 34 passengers. That was good. But walking through Dubrovnik massed with other cruise people having their three hours to explore was, again, WTF? This isn’t travel. It’s cattle being herded from one place to another all because they don’t want the Joy of planning their own Travel.

  41. KYRawDawg Avatar

We really enjoy them, it always depends on your destination though. But everything on the ship is usually an awesome experience. With everything being included, you can’t beat the pricing since you can get tickets for the ship at sometimes such low prices., It does depend on the time of the year that you go as well.

  42. handyandy727 Avatar

I’m honestly scared to go on one. I’m afraid I have the same fear as my dad, who panics if he can’t see land.

  43. DeaddyRuxpin Avatar

Meh. I’ve been on one and didn’t enjoy it. They just aren’t for me. My parents have been on several and loved them.

  44. Sensitive_Hat_9871 Avatar

My wife and I (both retired) have been on several european river cruises with Viking. Their boats are small with under 200 guests. We’re scheduled for an ocean cruise with them around the British Isles next year. Their ocean liners carry less than 1,000 guests. Most people I’ve seen on their cruises so far are over age 40.

Their demographic is catered toward adults: in fact no one under 18 is allowed. I am thankful for that. I cannot imagine trying to relax and enjoy a cruise with 5,000 people including noisy children and rowdy young teens.

Yes, I’m a grumpy old man but that’s why I sail with an outfit that caters to my demographic. In short, we love to cruise in a calm and relaxing atmosphere with people like us.

  45. SadSickSoul Avatar

I am aggressively apathetic towards them and as someone who doesn’t enjoy traveling, I expect being on a cruise is the type of traveling I would enjoy the least. I have no plans to go on one in my life and would turn down a cruise even if all expenses were paid and it didn’t cost me time off or anything else from missing work. It’s simply not my thing even a little bit.

  46. Finney1313 Avatar

I’d rather take a stick in the eye than go on a cruise. I had panic attacks in Hawaii because I knew that I was on an island in the middle of the ocean; a giant boat with thousands of people and germs everywhere? NO THANKS, lol.

  47. Karaoke_Singer Avatar

Love them, I’ve been on four and looking forward to the next one, hopefully next year.

  48. DonBoy30 Avatar

Very very indifferent. I would never spend a dime on it, but if someone was going to pay my way 100% to go on a cruise, I’d listlessly go along most likely.

  49. LordofTheFlagon Avatar

Why would I ever want to be trapped on a massive boat with a questionable maintenance history, shoddy cleaning at best, with a mass of the general, often sick, public?

Absolutely none of that sounds appealing.

  50. nim_opet Avatar
  51. Mr-Duck1 Avatar

I generally like them. Did a Med cruise last fall and it was great except for the Covid. It’s not a deep dive into any stop, but it’s a sampler to let you know if you ever want to come back.

  52. BilliousN Avatar

I used to work for a cruise line, and I found the entire concept to be vapid. You’re usually only in a given port for the day, long enough to go explore the diamonds international and the Starbucks and a token cultural event/location near the cruise terminal, then off to stuff yourself to mediocre entertainment.

I got pretty good at getting away from the ports and finding the “real” places I was visiting, but it took a lot of gained wisdom and some risk (miss the boat, lose your job).

Like, if you’ve eaten at a Chinese buffet, you don’t really know what China is like… that’s how cruise tourism is.

  53. Super_Swordfish_6948 Avatar

I work offshore on ships, too much like work.

  54. Standylion Avatar

I hate resorts and a cruise is just a resort you can’t leave.

  55. WithCheezMrSquidward Avatar

They’re fine if you like the destinations. I say it’s fine every few years if you just wanna relax. Not every vacation needs to be uncovering some ancient ruins only 1% of tourists ever see (this may be a hot take of mine.)

  56. BelCantoTenor Avatar

Not all cruises, cruise lines, and cruise destinations are the same. There are large commercial cruise ships (carnival, Norwegian, Virgin, Royal Caribbean, Disney). They are all very VERY different from each other. I’ve been on smaller private chartered cruises with 10-20 people. They are usually tailored specifically for the guests that attend (co-Ed scuba groups, gay men clothing optional, etc) and are also very different from each other.

In general I have had a positive experience with all of the many different types of cruises that are available. For very different reasons.

  57. MontEcola Avatar

It does not appeal to me. When I travel I prefer to go off the beaten track. You don’t get that on a cruise.

A good friend goes on one about every 2 years with the entire extended family. They see it as family time. Not for me. We do our reunions by renting two beach condos, or cabins on a lake. One cabin and two campers and we have enough room for all.

  58. huhwhat90 Avatar

I’ve only been on one as a kid, but I really enjoyed it. Granted, it was on a ship that would be considered tiny by today’s standards. The gigantic, floating resorts look exhausting, but the smaller ships look like they could be a nice time.

  59. mrnatural18 Avatar

A sailboat with up to 5 people would be great.

A floating Vegas hotel filled with a bunch of strangers that you can’t get away from; not for me, especially if you factor in the petridish like nature of the disease environment.

  60. bigcaterpillar_8882 Avatar

Maybe do it once in a lifetime. All inclusive resorts seem much more economical

  61. Tacoshortage Avatar

Not a fan. Everything is on a schedule, the stops are never long enough, the time ashore is never long enough. That being said, if you look at the boat as the vacation, and there might me a bit of sight-seeing along the way, then they are OK.

I’ve travelled a lot, always learn some of the local language, like to spend days or weeks in a location and try to avoid tourist areas so the cruises are the exact opposite of how I like to travel.

  62. Successful_Way_3239 Avatar

I guess they are just not for me. Not my idea of relaxing.

The last thing I want from a vacation is to be trapped in the middle of the ocean, crammed into a huge ship full of thousands of people, and given strict timelines on port stops.

  63. ooo0000ooo Avatar

It depends on where you go. I did one in Alaska that I enjoyed because I visited places that I would not have seen otherwise. I would never do a long cruise or for short stops in cities that I would visit on my own.

  64. AlternativeResort477 Avatar

I did a 7 day Caribbean cruise and I loved it. It never felt crowded to me and I’m a very solitary person.

  65. MonkeyManJohannon Avatar

I’ve both enjoyed cruises and hated them historically. I’ve been on 6. I’d say the balance is about 50/50. We took our kids on one last year (Royal Caribbean 4 days Bahamas)…it was a great time, especially the 2 days we had at their private island CoCo Cay. We had so much fun as a family, and it was by far the most relaxing cruise I’ve ever gone on (we had an over water bungalow for 2 days and it was bliss).

Me and my fiancé went on a very expensive 7 days cruise on Celebrity 5 years ago and it was very relaxing and nice…food was decent, amenities were very good and it was not super crowded. It was also very expensive.

3 of the cruises I’ve taken were absolutely not worth it and only partially enjoyable. I find that most cruises have terrible food, overpriced everything and don’t really give you much in the way of rewarding experience when visiting other countries as the ports are almost always pure tourist traps and the cost of getting out and doing legitimate experiences is incredibly high when stacked with the cost of the cruise.

Overall, they are not my favorite method of vacation. I don’t hate them, but I vastly prefer all inclusive resorts and less centralized experiences. My family tends to agree too…we offered another cruise trip to our 3 sons or a direct trip to Mexico to a resort and they didn’t hesitate to choose the resort trip over the cruise.
