Using a new towel to dry off after a shower just feels wrong. It feels like it isn’t doing what a towel is meant to do. The ideal towel is not too long, not too short, thin enough to feel like you have real control over it, and a bit rough. A new, soft AF towel just doesn’t feel like it is doing the thing it was meant to do. Towels are not blankets. They are not meant to be comfy, they are meant to dry you off in a quick, efficient way, then you hang them up, and move on with your life.
New towels:
– don’t dry you off as fast. take more energy to use because they are thicker than necessary and they don’t absorb water as well. They are difficult to control. When you hang them up the fall off of the hook easier.
Old towels:
– Thin and comfortable in the hand. They have lost much of their plushy deadweight so they are lighter and easier to handle. They take less energy to use. They absord water better. The roughness makes you feel cleaner after you scrub your body with it.

I feel similarly about using fabric softener on towels. It makes them feel softer, but they don’t do nearly as good of a job absorbing water.
YES. I can’t stand the super soft, plush towels.
So what do I do? First, I make sure never ever to buy the most expensive kind. Get the mid-range or even cheap ones from Target or Walmart. Second, do not use the dryer! Hang them up, in the sun if possible, and they will get that more crispy, stiff feeling.
I don’t think I’ve ever thought this much about a towel ever. I don’t think I even have an opinion to agree or disagree
My bath/shower towels are abrasive as fuck and I love it, it’s like drying yourself with sandpaper.
The “super soft” towels are likely just coated in chemicals to make them feel that way. Those chemicals are likely just grease. You gotta wash them a few times to get that off
Completely agree. I do not have any desire to lounge around in my towel. I want to quickly get dry and get dressed. I also have long hair and the new towels do nothing to help remove the excess water.
I started off thinking this was weird and wrong… but after reading/thinking it through, you might actually be right. I distinctly remember towels that were so soft and thick that it didn’t seem like they were actually getting me dry. Another commenter mentioned oily chemicals coating new towels, which is gross, but it really would explain a lot.
