I spend over 200 night a year in hotels due to my work. AMA.

r/

As above really, I (F29) travel a lot with work, usually around Europe, Asia and N America and because of that, I seem to spend the majority of my personal life in hotels. As much as I don’t think it’s that interesting, a friend recommend that I do one of these as I always seem to be telling her about things that have happened while I’m staying in them. AMA!

I totally agree about the bathroom layouts. And in Europe they seem so small. Tiny shower boxes with no doors that water goes everywhere. In St Moritz the shower wall was near the toilet such that anyone with some extra pounds wouldn’t be able to sit down.

My other peeves is when they change the temp you set it at in the first day. Changing the towels when you clearly put them up in the hooks to not change out. Opening the curtains. Or the curtains don’t completely close to block out the light. And all flat pillows.

Why do you think meeting clients in person matters in this day and age.

Which hotel brand are you loyal to? And do you have any issues with temperature? I know for a fact most marriott hotels are locked to 22c and you can’t change temperature (even if the display on the wall will show whatever fake temperature you want). I wonder if the hotels you are staying in have properly functioning thermostats and you can make the room very cold if you want?

    Question Answer Link
Best hotel so far in Berlin, London, Paris? I’m based in England so I don’t stay over in London. Way often and if I do, I usually just go for a cheap mid/range one as it’s usually because I’ll be out drinking. In Paris it’s the Shangri-La and in Berlin I stay at a small family run one where the owner is wonderful to me. Here
How has this affected your ability to have a relationship? Do you ever hook up while on trips? It’s very difficult to have a relationship to be honest, as well as never being at home I also spend a lot of time with clients during the evenings and it has caused jealousy issues in the past. Here
Have you joined all of the major points / awards programmes, and have you determined which hotel chain you prefer? Yes but I don’t always have an option; quite often it’s based on where I need to be and sometimes they can be quite remote. I use Marriott Bonvoy and Raddison the most but the standard differs a lot across the different hotels and regions. Here
Do you eat the hotel food or do you pack snacks or buy snacks at the destination? I very rarely eat at the hotels. I like to get out and explore the local (not touristy) culture where I can. Here
best and worst thing that happened to you while you stayed at the hotel I’ve had so many upgrades to presidential suites and that’s always fun – especially in a hotel I haven’t stayed in before. I’ve had a lot of negative experiences too; I’ve had ceilings collapse, earthquakes and a guy flying a drone into my room while I was naked on the bed in Barcelona. Here
Have you ever checked into a room and discovered it had bed bugs? No! Not yet anyway. I think I’ve been lucky. Here
Have you ever found a hidden camera, etc? Sort of! I found what I believed to be a camera and called hotel security. They removed it but then wouldn’t let me see it and they denied it being a camera after. It was clearly a camera with an SD card in it. I had been there 4 nights at that point! Police wouldn’t do anything without evidence. Hotel then denied the event ever taking place. Here
Assuming you have a home, who maintains your place while you’re away? I’d imagine it would somewhat sting to pay rent/mortgage on a place you barely reside. Also, do you have any idea where you’d like to put down roots once you retire from traveling so frequently? If so, is it somewhere different from where you originated? I have a cleaner and sometimes I will have a friend stay there but usually it’s empty. I actually love my home city so planning to stay here unless something changes. Here
How is solo traveling been so far for you in the different continents? India was a little problematic and so was China but everywhere else it’s usually fine. Every country has weirdos so these things can happen but it’s not usually a reflection of the country/culture. Here
What does a VP of sales do? How does your typical workweek look like? There’s some key customers that I will go to monthly so I would visit them and then slot in other customers/prospects to suit the logistics. I usually leave at around lunchtime on a Sunday and depending on where I am going, I try and go to the gym, sauna etc. on the Sunday night before having some food and then having a relaxing evening (I actually enjoy Sunday nights for this reason). Then it’s all travel from there. Sometimes I get back on a Friday but quite often it will be the Saturday morning. Here
Welcome to the club love my job 20 years of dealing with customers, now I work alone 2 weeks out of the month I’m staying in hotels did I mention company credit card 💳 Yep. My company credit card wore out recently so I had to get a new one! Here
Have you seen Up in the Air with George Clooney? If yes does the movie resonate with you? Yes. It’s very, very accurate. Here
Do you hook up all over the place?? Not all over the place but I have done. It’s actually not that common for me. Here
Does it ever get lonely for you like missing family and friends? And are you like a consultant? It does. My life has adapted to this way of working so I don’t really miss what I don’t have. It’s been a long time so it has made it difficult to build some relationships. Here
Have you ever been to weird vibe hotel? Bad ghost etc Yes, I was at a boutique hotel in Istanbul once and the vibe just wasn’t right. I still can’t explain it but something wasn’t right there. Here
What is your job ? I’m a VP of Sales for our overseas partners. Here
Do you have a collection of all the complimentary toiletries from the hotels? I used to. I don’t bother now. Here
How do you stay in shape? I travel for work but not has much as you and have gained some lbs from it, finding time to workout is near non-existent during travel for me. Just a lot of exercise! Here
gotta be a good bug story There’s not! I did have a crazy big spider on my ceiling in Bali once but no bugs (so far!) Here
Do you travel business ?? Yes where possible; sometimes for short haul European flights, I just do economy as it’s easy enough. Here
How much do you make annually? Is it worth the grind of your travel schedule? I’d rather not say. And yes. Here
What was the funniest thing that you have experienced in relation to other guests? I’ve heard a lot of people having sex! Here
What are your go-to foods when you don’t feel like going out? Do you ever cook in the hotel? Never. If I really can’t be bothered to go out then I’ll get fast food delivered to my room. Here
Aside from the obvious – which we all have to say is cleanliness(!) – what are the three things that really elevate a hotel room/hotel for you? Check in experience, sound proofing and bathroom layout. Here
Why do you think meeting clients in person matters in this day and age. In many in-person meetings with sales people, I am left wondering why didn’t we do this over a teams call? But I realize I am in a minority. It’s not the business talk that can be done on a Teams call that I’m going there to do. The value is in building the relationships, meeting the wider teams and uncovering additional opportunities. Here
What have you taken with you from hotel rooms? I quite often take the mini bottles of alcohol from the mini bar! Here
How many languages have you learned over the years of doing this? Two other than English. Here
How do you manage jet lag? Badly! I don’t really have a good sleeping pattern so I’m used to just grabbing sleep when I can Here
What’s the strangest thing you’ve found left in a hotel room? I once opened the wardrobe and it was completely full of somebody else’s clothes! I’ve found all sorts – snacks, clothes, phones and a few sex toys. Here
Do you get paid well at least? I can’t complain. Here
