People are paranoid because they’ve been told for years how vulnerable older people are to scammers. Also people in the doorstep always feel pushy. Can you leave them some info instead and pop by again a week or two later?

I imagine they also don’t necessarily understand the technology, don’t see the point in an investment that they may not live to get much benefit from, especially if they have to sell to go into a residential home. Perhaps they also don’t want the disruption of work on their home like that

You told us the sales hook, what are the total terms? Monthly payments? Contract length?

Why do you think that people 75+ are looking to make major long-ten changes to their lives/homes/finances? People on fixed incomes tend to prefer stability.

I also wonder just how many of them live in private homes. Apartment/condo dwellers are never going to buy your product.

Have some written information for them. I get very dismissive when they have nothing to hand out so I can read on my own without pressure. I like to look things up and later ask questions before I decide. You won’t get in my house on your first visit. Leave information and make an appointment to call back.

When you lived a long time, you realize anyone coming to the door or trying to sell you something is 99% of the time a load of bs. Your product might be amazing but you’re going about selling it wrong.

Big thing for me is let me research it on my own. High pressure sales people on the street or at the door won’t let you do that. Doesn’t matter if you don’t have high pressure, let people make a decision. I deny everyone a chance to sell me anything, and nowadays I just tell people to f off as soon as they start talking. I’ve lived too long and heard way too many people try to sell me something and I hate it.

I think a big part of it is older people all know someone who had a solar installation that still hadn’t paid itself off after 15 years. The panels had incurred damage, the original contractor had long since gone out of business. Add to that the company financing the installation has a lien on the house and the person can’t sell because the buyers don’t want to deal with it.

I know the market dynamics have changed (well except for tariffs now) but overall solar is going to be a difficult sell.

My neighbor, a frail single 82 yr old man has 45 solar panels on his roof….his payments over $300 a month. He was going to sue because he told the salesman no…but he was duped. He’s been moved to assisted living after a bad fall and this solar fiasco is just one more thing he his kids get to sort out. Please leave us alone.
